Prologue

A good day to die he thought to himself as he lay on the now deserted battlefield. It had been a slaughter, with mass casualties on both sides. Thousands had rallied to him when he had called them, thousands ready to fight and die for their freedom from a monarch they no longer believed in. Many of those thousands, unfortunately, lay with him upon the battlefield either dead or dying.

He sees it as his fault these men had died. Good men, who had lives and families that will be waiting for them to come home. But they wonā€™t, and never will. It was for a good cause though he thought to himself again. A good cause.

Moments before he had been cut down by a knife to the back he had witnessed this battle come to fruition, for the king he opposed had also been cut down at last. This revolution would not die with him, for without a monarch a revolutionary government would be created. Either that, or a new monarch will rise he thought to himself for the last time. He could feel death closing in on him at last.

At first his legs went numb, and then he could no longer move his arms. Slowly he was growing cold, and thinking became harder for him. When the cold finally reached his chest he let go. He let go of fear and pain, let go of hatred and love, and finally felt himself enter the embrace of his god, Kugaron.

Two days later, in the capitol city of Kugoruā€¦

It was a beautiful day outside for playing games, and thatā€™s exactly what the ten year old princess wanted to do. She continued walking through the palaceā€™s outdoor garden looking for her younger brother and sister, the quiet swish swish of her silken dress giving away her position. She knew they would be hard to find, but didnā€™t want to give in so easily.

As she continued walking down the cobblestone path through the garden, she heard some rustling noises coming from a nearby bush. Aha! Thatā€™s where they are! she thought excitedly. She made her way over to the bushes as quietly as she could, picking up the hem of her dress to stop it from dragging on the ground. Once she reached the bushes she put her hands between some branches, ready to pull them apart to reveal her brother and sister.

Threeā€¦ Twoā€¦ Oneā€¦ she thought to herself, then pulled the branches apart. But instead of finding her brother and sister there, she found a royal guardsman. Something was wrong though, because he was sitting there with a hand on his chest trying to stem the blood flowing out of his knife wound. ā€œPrincess!!ā€ the guard said faintly, grabbing her arm.

ā€œPrincess, you must leave! This place is no longer safe, and killers are loose here now. Get out before it is too late!ā€ and with that statement she saw the last light of life leave his eyes. Stumbling backwards, the princess turned around and started running for the safety of the palace.

As she raced through the garden, more and more guardsmenā€™s bodies littered the ground. Now she was truly frightened, and picking up the hem of her dress again she raced for the safety of the palace. Nearer and nearer the palace came, and when she finally reached the double doors that led into the palace she could hear the sound of swords hitting swords.

Fearing the worst, she raced through the palaceā€™s corridor towards her parents rooms. The fear was so potent that she ignored her surroundings, blinded to everything but the goal of reaching her mother. The closer she came to her parentā€™s rooms, the easier she could hear voices in the corridor. Slowing down, she carefully crept up to the corner she found herself near and peered around to see what was happening.

The doors to her parentā€™s rooms were wide open, and kneeling on the floor in the middle of a group of strange men was her mother. A look of fear was on her face, a look the princess had seldom seen. Almost faster than the princess could see, the arm of the man standing in front of her mother moved forward and shoved a knife through the middle of her motherā€™s chest.

Letting out a scream of fear, the princess turned around and ran as fast as she could in the other direction. She could only go so fast though, and she could hear the men from the corridor chasing her and catching up. Fear raced through her system, giving her the adrenaline she needed to just barely stay ahead of the men chasing her.

Rounding a corner in the corridor, she never saw the man that was there until it was too late. Her momentum not allowing her to stop, she ran right into him and they both fell on the ground. Lashing out with her arms and legs, she got the unknown man to let her go and jumped to her feet. It was too late though, and the last thing she felt had been a blow to the back of her head that knocked her unconscious. But before she gave in to the darkness, her last thoughts were of her brother and sister as well as the death of her mother.
