This "award" "recognizes" the biggest defender fail of the past year. It can be an operation that fell flat on its face based on whatever criteria you see fit.

Nominees:
Femdom Empire
Singapore
South Pacific
Eternal Scholars

Whatever this defender was doing: https://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?p=30936509#p30936509

tl;dr: Cat/Malvacka jumped into the wrong region by mistake. Three or four defenders followed her anyway. One of them went back to Spear Danes, then turned around and went back to the (still wrong) target region. We joked that they forgot their spear.

The Femdom Empire siege. Half a month of jumps every update, with only one break for Christmas. Up to 40 nations at our peak. Danes Danes Danes. Agh fucking Jadny. Thinking we'd win best raid for it.

I'd be nominating it for Best Operation if it hadn't failed :P

I nominate the Failed Liberation of Singapore
Here's what happens when a young and naive person is thrust into the forefront of defender leadership with too little experience under their belt. In this case, that was Roavin (me!). The numbers on the raider point were way too outrageous at 50-60 endorsements, but Roavin had a "plan" - utilizing attrition runs with clean nations, passing those that stayed in the region onto pilers, and then jumping in again, starting on the Friday Night major update and then taking the region using the built up beachhead by Sunday minor. What Roavin didn't realize was a few things. First, people didn't like passing on nations, and many ignored the order to use clean nations. Second, taking a week to prepare already bolstered the influence on the lead plus the regional officers with border control that establishing a beachhead was nigh impossible. Third, the assumption that you could just find pilers to pass nations to and jump into the region with 40 endorsements each update. Fourth, vastly overestimating the state of defenderdom at the time - and that should have been apparent from the lack of experienced leaders around too, leaders that would have affirmed Klopstock, the only person to say "dude, that's not gonna work". Predictably, the planned that weekend failed, so much so that the third and fourth planned hits weren't even attempted. The Invaders' mocking of defenderdom was at its peak.

I nominate the Failed Liberation of South Pacific
The Invaders had taken South Pacific. We rallied troops for a week, had everyone on board (including Texas), had everything perfectly prepared, and were ready to take it. Then a small snafu happened. A trigger that was set for the 2 minute warning was accidentally used as the GO trigger, and all 40+ people jumped into the region 2 minutes early. With their three border control officers, The Invaders quickly made mincemeat out of the force, banjecting every nation that moved in before the region updated.

(I disagree that FE is the worst, btw - it's the most notorious, sure, but it also had some very positive aftereffects that cannot be understated)

There aren't enough stars in the thing to display my senior warden status and I'm also too lazy to do anything about it, so...yeah...oh hey it's the Defender Awards! Good luck everyone! Jeez what is the character limit for this thing
I nominate Eternal Scholars. We ran truly useless (3 vs 50) sieges into this, never even got close to the numbers required for liberation, while The Invaders banjected every single native and then left.

I second Singapore, South Pacific, and Eternal Scholars. Those were all pretty bad. :P

One minor point regarding Femdom Empire: If this is supposed to be a failed defender operation, does Femdom Empire count? I was under the impression that it was an attempted invasion, and that not all defenders were inclined to participate. I'm not sure it should qualify for this?
