Cambridge In a Bit of a Crunch General Manager Benevolent Thomas with Assistant Coach Burke Hanson The Cambridge Crunch currently sit in thirteenth position of the Steel Division2. They spent the majority of the prior season in the same position, barely escaping relegation in the end. Fans of the franchise have been highly critical of Thomas who elected to improve the teams facilities as opposed to pursuing lucrative players during the lively off season. While the investments appear to be paying dividends for the Youth Squad, the lack of dynamic play on the main squad is fatiguing even the loyalest of fans. In addition to mid-season woes, Cambridge has to combat declining ticket sales and reduced sponsor enthusiasm. If the club continues to fail to produce profits, it could be in the red financially by the end of the season. When the Crunch were first promoted into the Steel Division, ownership spent thousands of galleons improving the club's stadium which could come back to haunt them if they can't afford to maintain the stands. These many investments have potential to be great moves in the future, but for now, the club is struggling to survive the austerity measures taken in the fallout of the gamble. Currently 5-19, the Crunch have a chance to reverse their fortune in upcoming games against the Blackburn Eagled and the Dublin Redtails. These teams surround the Crunch in the standings at twelfth and fourteenth respectively. Wins in both of these matches would result in Cambridge making their way out of the bottom four. The schedule for the next few matches are rather friendly for the struggling club, which may see them break into the top ten if the team plays perfectly. |

"We're Going to Have to Make Changes"![]() After dropping two more matches, the Cambridge Crunch have fallen to fourteenth in the division. With the halfway point of the season rapidly approaching, the Crunch find themselves in a desperate situation. Nobody in the organization has been spared in the rising scrutiny by fans and commentators alike. There is plenty of blame to go around when it comes to the collapse of the emerging Quidditch club. The ownership electing to spend on increasing the stadium's size, the reluctance to try and trade up for veteran players, and of course the lacking performance by the team over the past ten matches. When pressed by reporters, General Manager Benevolent Thomas stated "We're going to have to make changes". Currently, three of the seven starting players are on the final year of their contracts. One of which, Shamus Doran, is a top ten seeker in the league. The other two are beater Jemima Bi and chaser Hanley Bailey. Bi is a mid-tier player, not far off in ability from the team's captain, Teresa Francis. Bailey, however, is one of the weaker starting chasers in the Steel Division. Doran is a must keep for the club, but Bi and Hanley need to prove their worth as they begin to enter negotiations. The rest of the squad's contracts are set to expire at the end of next season. With only Doran and Levine as potential stars, management will need to aggressively seek deals with outside talent as well as clearing roster space for their youth players. There is a lot of buzz circulating around Rizqallah Kirdar, the seventeen year old chaser from Egypt, who has also caught the interest of rival clubs. Earlier this season, the London Chelsea made a eight hundred galleon bid for the player which the Crunch denied. We should expect to see Kirdar enter the team's lineup by next season as a backup. Valda Harding is another possibility for a call-up, although unlikely. The sixteen year old English beater has been making rapid advancements in her game, but she's grown increasingly frustrated with the team's current condition. It is the opinion of this publication that Thomas is looking to make changes to the roster. The Crunch need to play as if though their spots on the team depend on their upcoming performances. Thomas knows his job is in the balance as well, so they should not expect any lenience for poor or uninspired play. |

Relegation Avoided! As a result of a tremendous rally in the closing week of the season, the Cambridge Crunch have maintained their status as a Steel Division club. "I'm very proud of how we decided to finish off this season" said General Manager Benevolent Thomas. "We played with desperation, and that's not necessarily bad thing". There was a scare on the eve of the final day of the season when Sark Speardanes managed to slide past them in the standings, but in the end Blackburn Eagled, Dublin Redtails and the Oxford Quidlings were the teams that were sent to the Iron League. As the Crunch head into another season in the Steel Division2, the club has made a few adjustments. First, youth players Rizqallah Kirdar and Valda Harding have been called up to play in the majors. It is speculated that the young talents will be primarily played in friendlies until they are ready to take the pitch on match days. The club has also decided to expand the stadium to accommodate for the team's growing fan base. Hoping to maximize off growing ticket sales, Cambridge aims to make a real play for veteran players as the season continues. As of now, all but one starter on the main squad are up for contract negotiations at the end of the season. In addition to the new seating at the pitch, the Cambridge Crunch have signed one season sponsorship deals with Gobbler Bank and Zoom Quidditch. The lucrative deal with GB could result in massive profits for the club if they can string together a winning season. That is, of course, if the club can learn the harsh lessons from the past season which nearly saw them to ruin. |
