The Republic of Gilead is a fundamentalist Christian theocracy, which arose when the previous government fell due to various disasters and a coup. In this nation we strive to return to Bible values. Unfortunately, the new regime has had to deal with the disasters of the old. Specifically, a nuclear power plant explosion and a antibiotic-resistant STD. As a result of this, only 1 in 5 women can conceive, and most babies fail to survive to birth, or die shortly thereafter. The government came up with a solution based off of Genesis 16 and 30. In this system, fertile females who committed capital crimes are let off easy, and are allowed to live, in return for the gift of new life. In a very short time, Gilead has pulled out of the dive the population rate was in and has almost leveled out. While this system may seem harsh, it's for the greater good, and these women were going to be executed, and they do have a choice. But the handmaid system, while the most well known facet of Gilead, is not the only noteworthy thing in this country. In three years Gilead cut carbon emissions by 75%, and has rebooted the agriculture industry to the point that starvation is no longer a concern in Gilead, unlock much of the rest of the world. Gilead is willing to trade, but most nations are not in diplomatic relations with Gilead, but a few occasionally will be friendly, and willing to trade. Gilead does not seek to make its neighbors angry, but some people really hate Gilead. I generally assume this is due to not understanding the Gileadean lifestyle. I hope this helps to clear up your questions and misunderstanding, and if you have questions, please contact us for more information. Under His Eye OOC: Yes, Gilead represents my real world views. Now, that said, the population decrease rate is not at apocalypse levels, so I would not personally support a handmaid program at this time. If birth rates drop to apocalypse levels, I probably would. But, I do hope this clears up some misunderstandings, specifically that the handmaids are getting off easy, and they do have a choice. Feel free to ask me questions below, on on the Q&A thread on the NS forums. Here is a personality quiz I found that some people might enjoy: Which The Handmaid's Tale character are you? Feel free to share who you got. I got Serena Joy, by the way. (Not 100% accurate, the last two sentences are not correct.) Thank you for reading, have a blessed day!
