How do you deal with tough situations?
Topic Started: Sun Dec 17, 2017 11:04 pm (46 Views)

This topic is about how administrators deal with the decision to issue major sanctions or bans.

I am most curious to see what various regions' "best methods" are for handling complaints. If someone comes to you, as an administrator, with a complaint what does the investigation process work?

If any admins are comfortable talking about how they handled a specific incident, that would be super insightful. I might jump back in later with a few tales of my own.

This is something that I am interested in hearing about as well. This is one thing that I feel like I struggle with as an Admin.

GP Outreach Officer, Madhouse Productions
I'm an admin for several groups and regions. The most notable is Madhouse. I maintain the forum and advise for Discord. As a Founder, I have full authority to act within the boundaries of our charter.

Tough situations are not as tough as one might think. To begin with, I'm empowered by our charters. Madhouse Productions (offsite, members of other RP sites can join) and The Madhouse Roleplay Group (specific to NationStates) are distinct and outline the important bits, such as: policy on muting and banning for Discord servers, and policies on lodging complaints. The decision is usually not mine alone to make, if that make sense. Our Founders determine whether or not a situation is something we can handle, or if the situation needs to be brought to a service provider's attention for violations of their ToS. (Those being NationStates, Discord, Skype, etc.)

I'm also given the right to bow out of making membership discipline decisions in situations that may involve me directly. Nobody can say, "Well, Swith was on the committee and she harbors a grudge against me! Unfair Discord ban! Fake news!"

The thing is to know when you're in over your head. Nobody can expect a young person to have the training necessary to handle tough cases, including complaints involving sexual harassment. "Going with your gut" may seem like the right thing to do... but doing that may put you in the wrong.

At all times, remain calm. Don't feel pressured to make a decision right away, unless an activity needs to be immediately stopped. Document every action you take. EVERY TIME. (This documentation is often kept in staff areas.) Make an effort to be transparent. For example... "Madhouse Productions has banned PlayerX from the Discord Server for repeatedly violating Discord policy in regards to the posting of NSFW material in our general channels."
