Posted Image St. James Palace Marlborough Rd, St. James's, London SW1A 1BS Letter to the NS World's Fair 14.12.2017 Hello, I'm going to drop the usual formality that the Kingdom of Great Britain is famous for and instead speak from the heart. Over the last year, NS has experienced several shockwaves. Experienced players have been outed as abusers, and many people across NS feel deeply wronged. A close friend and fellow player, Juris Lancaster, once said to me that this game is the most accurate political simulator in the world because we are playing against real, live people rather than a computer. I agree with that sentiment. It is important for us to realize that we're playing against people, and that we have responsibilities to look out for one another, to care for one another and remember the possible harm that our actions in-game might have to the person on the other side of the screen. When I was requested by my region's government to make this speech, and told of the theme for the NationStates World Fair NationStates for Tomorrow, I was intrigued. Upon viewing Europeia's presentation and petition to host the World Fair, I was surprised and further intrigued by the level of professionalism. As an academic, I love a good PowerPoint, and personally use Google Slides for everything, so that gets an extra cool point in my book. Back to the theme, however, and the importance of creating a game we can all play safely and have fun. NS isn't just a political simulator. Offsite forums, Skype chats, and Discord Servers have allowed me to connect with and make friendships which have stood the test of time. Many people I have come to know quite well offline and are my closest friends, and bore witness to some of the greatest struggles of my life. A select number of them will even be invited to my upcoming wedding. I'm not ashamed to admit that over last summer, I was homeless. I lived in hotels with my fiancee and her cat for almost two months, and had no source of income. My NS friends dropped everything and provided finanical assistance to me in this time, when none of my "RL" friends did the same. They helped me at my lowest point, and I will be forever grateful to them for that. When I reflect on the theme that Europeia presented, NationStates for Tomorrow, creating the game we WANT to play, and the community we want to have as players, that's what I see. People, despite differing politics and goals, who are willing to do whatever is necessary to help their friends. Many of you know that away from NS I'm just about the furthest thing from a monarchist that one can be. My political and personal philosophy is inherently grounded in helping people. That's what I want to do, and I'm sure that all of you can say the same. I know that we as players of this game can do better by one another, and as we can, we bloody well should. This process has already begun, with people in Europeia and many other regions petitioning the Moderators to create a protection system for younger players who are often the target of sexual abuse. I feel that together, this small group of people can make our digital world a microcosm of what we want the real one to be. I am confident that we can do this if we try hard enough. Good luck, good work, and never give up! Forever Your Humble and Obedient Servant and Friend His Britannic Majesty Henry IX King of Great Britain, Ireland, and France Posted ImagePosted Image |
