Posted Image THE KINGDOM OF ALEXANDRIA Aurum in Pace, Ferrum in Bello About Alexandria Alexandria was first founded in April 2014 as The Enlightened City of Alexandria by Joshua Ravenclaw in the online game of NationStates. By July of that year it had evolved from a City-State to a Kingdom, the Kingdom of Alexandria which used a mix of Athenian and Greek named and titles for offices and institutions. That version of Alexandria was a constitutional monarchy with a bicameral legislature and constitutional document (passed in October 2014) which limited the head of state ("Archon-Basileus") to acting with consent of the Legislature but as is common in user created region (UCR) politics, meant very little to them given the innate right of a Founder to act as they saw fit. In September 2015, Alexandria voted to dissolve its constitution, then referred to as the Constitution of the Ancien Régime in favour of a new structural system more focused on flexibility and social cooperation than legalese. Alexandria then moved to a Feudal-Age system, which is currently in effect to this day. Our Roleplay year is currently 8:17 on our calendar. We use Fantasy-Tech with a mix of Steampunk and Past-Tech for our world which does include Magic. We take inspiration from Dragon Age, The Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy and World of Warcraft for our various technology, magic and science levels, plus imagery and themes. The Lands of Alexandria are mapped extensively and divided into three administrative provinces - The Northern Reaches, The Heartlands and The Southern Reaches with The Crownlands being an autonomous district controlled by the Sovereign's Government, together they form the Kingdom of Alexandria. Our Former Royal Cartographer and world builder put together a set of tools to help you chart your course through the Kingdom. We welcome Dwarves, Elves and Humans into our lands but have not currently made any provision for other races yet. We do have a permanently open World Building Convention that should be your first stop in helping shape our world, including exploring the possibilities of new races and enclaves within Alexandria. For Mages, two bastions will exist; a Circle of Magi in Sapphire and a Guild of Enchanters/Arcane University in Abydos both overseen by the First Enchanter. The First Enchanter is a Crown appointed figure who serves as the final authority regarding Magic and its costs. Questions about magic should be asked in the Magic and Technology section of the Convention. Alexandria as a Political Structure Alexandria is a Kingdom ruled by an Absolute Monarch, often titled as "The Sovereign". Currently, Hyacinth Ravenclaw serves as Sovereign; essentially they rule Alexandria together with absolute authority over the subjects and serfs of the Kingdom with nobility vying for her attention and doing what they can to push their agendas. The highest authority beneath the Sovereign(s) is the Privy Council of State, which serves as the Executive Branch of Government. This body contains the Prime-Palatines, trusted members of the Sovereign's Council (as determined by them), and the High Chancellor. Beneath the Privy Council of State are the Crown Ministers of State who serve as Cabinet to the High Chancellor. Each member of the Privy Council of State and Crown Ministers of State are required to swear the applicable oath to the Crown in the Audience Chamber before being granted the powers for their role. High Chancellor: The High Chancellor is elected by Subjects of Alexandria once every three months, on the 15th day of December, March, June and September respectively. The Election shall be held in The Polling Centre and will be overseen by the Sovereign(s) or a named Election Commissioner who will be unable to vote. Following the popular vote, the Council of Palatines (Electors) will meet to cast votes based on the popular vote. It is a first-past-the-post system where the first candidate to gather 18 votes shall become be declared the victor. As of the previous summer, this office has remained vacant by order of the crown. The Kingsguard has two faces and distinct areas of focus for Alexandria; one of which is to serve the Kingdom as protectors and guardians of the Crown and the Capital City. The Kingsguard who focus entirely on that task are known as the Knight-Sentinels and are commanded by a Crown Appointed Knight-Commander. They are based out of Ministry of War and Peace within the Capital City. The second aspect of the Kingsguard is Military, Internal Security and Counter-Intelligence Operations. This includes command of the Royal Legion of Alexandria as well as Military Garrisons dotted around the Kingdom, in such places as Summerstede (the South) and Leiden (the North). Crown controlled Counties which are governed by Margraves who are part of the Kingsguard serve as the Crown's outpost for military command, reinforcements and logistics in different areas of Alexandria. Crime and Punishment: The High Justiciars serve to keep peace within Alexandria. They will work with Provincial Appointed Magistrates to investigate crimes, hear trials and appeals, sentence defendants and carry out punishments. There are three High Justiciars in total, each with a different focus: Investigation, Hearing, Appealing. Alexandria as a Social Structure Alexandria's political structure is secondary to the community that you have joined. Politics can be fun and enthralling but it can also be divisive and stressful which can see bonds of friendships break faster than good times and communication can restore them. Even the Roleplaying world and its intrigue, political manoeuvring and machinations should be taken as purely in-character and not allowed to cross over to out of character interactions. Alexandria made the move to Discord as its primary method of communication back in late 2015 and in early 2017 moved to a new server which was better equipped to deal with the search function and changes to Discord since 2015. Normally, we host a forum economy and currency network as part of our roleplay world but at the time of writing (updated: 21/06/17) the systems are disabled for maintenance. Alexandria operates a forum shop and economy modification (DBShop and DBCredits respectively) which provides both a currency system, and a financial incentive to get involved with the region. Holding government roles will earn you forum money, which can be spent on the forum - or in Roleplay. The government of Alexandria can also levies a tax on the income received from working government roles (not from shops, at the moment) which constitutes as its national budget. Currency:
The House System and World Alexandria's primary structure is that of a medieval monarchy, with all the attachments. This includes a feudal system and political structure not uncommon in medieval England or mainland Europe. Alexandria itself was just slightly bigger than France geographically, due to expansion from its original size (which was roughly the same size as France's 18th Century Borders geographically) prior to that. We are now roughly the same size as Turkey's modern day borders following the northern province expanding further into the Confederation of Albingia over the course of 2016. Listed below are the different levels of peerage within the Kingdom. Each rank has an equivalent to a real world level of nobility. Titles of nobility are granted by the Sovereign upon recommendation from the leaders of each province or directly by the Sovereign.
The Northern Reaches: are the most northern province of Alexandria. The Northern Reaches are the current highest point of the Alexandrian Kingdom. Founded through conquest by a now dead house, The Northern Reaches was at one time a coalition of barbarian tribes and one more advanced culture. House Astor marched through the province and united them all under Alexandrian rule but when House Astor attempted a bloody coup d'etat, they were removed from power and defeated by forces led by Ragnar Odinsson, later Head of House Odinsson for their role in past atrocities. Now a very different land, The Northern Reaches boasts the Kingdoms most industrialized cities and is always pushing technology forward. The Northern Reaches is far from what it was like more than thirty years ago. The only thing truly to how it was is the fact that monsters of all sorts are still drawn to the lands in mass and as such provides those seeking adventure and rich hunting lands with a lot of entertainment. House Odinsson, one of the most influential Great Houses in Alexandria rules over The Northern Reaches with a firm and fair hand. The house encourages education and the bettering of ones self and many counties have already done away with serfs and indentured servitude. A house founded on trust, honor, respect and acceptance, House Odinsson though not the most political of all Great Houses is in many people's minds what it means to truly be an Alexandrian. Kuling Odinsson:Head of House Odinsson, he is the son of the former Lord of the North and heir to the throne of Clodania. He is currently married to Lyssa Ravenclaw, granddaughter of the late Joshua Ravenclaw and Queen Hyacinth. The Heartlands are the largest and most populated province of Alexandria, occupying the central areas of Alexandria and bordering Albion to the west, the Crownlands to the East and controlling the Alexandrian Strait. The Heartlands are ruled by the Ancient and Noble House of Ravenclaw. Not too long ago, the Heartlands were bathed in blood following an army from the Astor controlled North which marched through the Northern Roads determined to force the Sovereign to his knees. The Kingdom rallied and the landscape still bears scars in County Arcadia and in Knightlow (Crownlands) of the battles that occurred between House Ravenclaw and House Astor in what is remembered as "The Northern Insurgency”. Following the death of Joshua Ravenclaw in Coronpolis, his son James I assumed the throne under the name of Thalassa. To assist him in his rule he elevated his wife Artemis and aunt Princess Domina as regents. For several months the Kingdom was content until word spread of armies being raised against the crown. Within a period of two weeks, her Majesty Queen Hyacinth Ravenclaw ascended the throne as Sovereign and reinstatement of House Ravenclaw as the ruling House of Alexandria. The Southern Reaches are currently the most divided province within Alexandria with factions - ranging from Great House Cromartie, currently rulers of the Province from the City of Dardania (County Florenshire), to Minor House Dracosier to even long dormant House Isaraider. Whichever way the Province goes, Prime-Palatine George Cromartie will have a fight on their hands to keep the other Houses out of their gardens. In the past, the Southern Province was most prosperous with its mainland trading routes to the south, from the gleaming and bejewelled palaces and cathedrals, and then darkness came. The Cromarties have done much to rebuild the northern part of the Province, but the southern counties still linger in the shade of darkness, but are on the path to redemption. George Cromartie: A founding member of House Cromartie, he once ruled vast foreign lands before leaving to strike out and find new lands for the House. More at home at sea than on land, George is an accomplished sailor, having sailed south years ago in an attempt to retrieve Hellspite, the family's legendary crossbow, he now leads his house in Alexandria and is a devoted follower of his sovereigns. |
