With election season underway in Lazarus, Sovereign Loftegen is relaxed and confident of relection. He told this reporter that he's very pleased with the way all the candidates have conducted their campaigns.

"I like a clean race," Loftegen said, while puffing on an expensive cigar. "Horse and Caldariat (his rivals for the Sovereignity) should be proud, and rightly so, of the way they've run their respective shows. They just had too big an obstacle to overcome."

"Sounds like you're certain of victory," I said.

"Nothing's certain until the polls close and the votes are counted," Loftegen said. "But I have a feeling I'll be re-elected. I have a record of peace, prosperity, and stability to run on, and I think it will serve me well."

"There have been some rumblings about the change you made to the Regional Message Board on March 17th," I said. "Some people weren't too happy about that."

"I haven't heard any rumblings," Loftegen countered. "One person said they were going to complain, before they realized what day it was, and figured out it was a joke."

"Then there is the matter of the new regional flag..."

"New flag," Loftegen scoffed. "It's the prize that was promised to the flag contest winner, publicly announced before hand, with no objections made. The proper regional flag will go back up tomorrow."

"There's also a rumor that you have more 'jokes' planned for the future," I said.

"Is there now?" Loftegen asked, giving me a sidewise look. "And where might you have heard this...rumor?"

"You know I can't reveal my sources," I said.

"Ah, yes, journalistic ethics," Loftegen chuckled, taking a final drag on his cigar before stubbing it out in the human-skull ashtray on his desk.

"You look a little tired," Loftegen said. "Why don't you...take a seat?" he added, gesturing at a nearby Comfy Chairâ„¢.
I sat reluctantly, and watched while Loftegen fetched two glasses and a decanter of pale liquid. When he had poured, he picked up the glasses and offered one to me.

"Brandy?" Loftegen said. "It's really good."

"I shouldn't," I demurred, but the Sovereign would have none of it.

"Drink," he insisted, "and we'll talk about this anonymous source of yours."

That's all I remember, before waking up at home. My wife tells me I was brought home, thoroughly sloshed, by governemnt agents who took care to make sure my phone and tablet got there with me. They don't appear to have been tampered with, so maybe I did just drink too much and pass out. I worry, though, about what I may have said under the influence. Also the date, April 1st. It's in my head and I don't know why.
