To what extent would you support gun control? Are you in favour of absolute prohibition, limited restrictions or no restrictions at all? |

Considering that I'm British, and thus from a sane continent, I'm favour of strict restrictions. Absolute prohibition isn't a sensible position, as there are groups with a genuine need or interest - professional sportsmen or hunters, for example - but widespread ownership is not a sane concept. Every reputable study I am aware of has concluded that you are less safe owning a gun than not owning one; you are more likely to be killed with a firearm you own than to ever use it in your own defense. At the same time, there is a clear causal link demonstrating a rise in both homicides and crime in general where guns are easily available. Guns lead to more crime and more murder. Guns do not make you safer. Anyone who claims something to the contrary does not know what they are talking about. Unless you can demonstrate a clear need to possess a gun, good mental health, a clean criminal record, and safe storage and maintenance, you should not be allowed to possess one. Even then such ownership should be limited to breach loading, non-automatic weapons; shotguns and bolt action rifles. Handguns and automatic weapons should be absolutely prohibited. |

Bel's hit the nail on the head. Gun Control is a must in the modern developed world and the US is behind. -Is from the US. |

In general no. am okay with basic provisions like universal background checks and assault weapons bans, however. Gun ownership can be an effective deterrent against robbery, burglary, assault, and rape -- and the US has lower occurrence rates of those than many European countries, including the UK for that matter. http://www.civitas.org.uk/crime/crime_stats_oecdjan2012.pdf Edited by Durkadurkiranistan II, Jun 5 2015, 05:42 PM.

I'm sorry, I am not aware of any reputable study that shows a causal link between gun ownership and lower rates of any form of crime. The study which you linked to - which makes no such claim - directly contradicts your assertion, showing the US ahead of the entirety of Europe on rape and the entirety of the western world on homicide. |

sweden is part of europe and has more rape per capita. We also have less rape per capita than Australia or NZ. But yes looks like there's little to no demonstrable relationship between gun control/ownership and crime other than homicides maybe. Edited by Durkadurkiranistan II, Jun 6 2015, 01:45 AM.

This study clearly states it's about 'recorded cases', so it only states that women in Sweden file complaints more easily than in some other countries. Just like in Belgium people file a lot of robbery complaints, I should know I'm a Belgian and I'm quite convinced we don't actually have the most robberies in the world. With homicide it's a bit different I think... |
