Should the Military be Independent?

Some people have proposed that the military be part of the normal executive government under the Delegate, others have proposed it being lead by a separate, independent office. What do people think?

I personally have no strong feelings either way.

I think that it should be a part of the normal executive.

The argument that it should not be to prevent coups does not hold water. As an example, the entirety of the LLA opposed Stujenske during this most recent coup, except for Horse. This includes Campinia, the Stujenske appointed LLA General.

I also agree that it should be a part of the normal executive.

So long as the military culture inspires loyalty to the region instead of loyalty to the Delegate, I don't think there's any danger of it ever turning against the region, as recent events have proven.

I like the idea of the military being independent of the executive branch. I just really like the idea of generals being answerable to the legislature rather than only the executive branch.

Even if the military is under the Delegate, the legislature would still have the power to dismiss any government official, including military officers.

I'm comfortable with the military being linked to the executive branch then.

If we end up with an elected cabinet, I think the head of the military should be elected like other cabinet ministers. If we don't, I'm fine with the position being part of the normal executive, though I think establishment of a dedicated corps of generals within the LLA that provides continuity should be a priority.

The way you capitalized it, I was worried this would be about turning the military neutral or imperialist-light. I wouldn't have a problem with that per se if the majority of the region wants that, but for obvious reasons I wouldn't be comfortable with being part of its leadership in that case...

An elected military head could work under some restrictions like prior military activity, stuff like that.
I don't know if an independent military RRA-style would work at the moment given the low number of active troops and inactive leadership (which, with Horse gone, DYP uncertain and Pergamon, well... being a tool, consists of just me :P and we all know how active I am...)

I would say the Delegate as 'head of state' so to speak should also be commander-in-chief, but only if as noted the legislature has the ability to regulate appointments as well.

Edited. Thinking about it more, I actually wouldn't mind an entirely independent branch that answers just to the legislature. It seems to fit with the whole only the legis can declare war thing.

So I guess what I'm saying is I don't know and don't mind either way?

I believe the military should be an independent branch, and that the head of the army be an elected official.
