When it became clear that a special election would be needed, I spent a lot of time debating whether to run for Defender of the Realm. I've never seriously considered seeking a position of authority in the region, both because I'm already the leader of another region and because I felt that my best role here was to advise, as a member of the Assembly and later on to various Sovereigns as a member of their Cabinets. Suffice to say that I don't take this decision to run lightly. However, recent events have left me disturbed about the state of our regional security. Our Delegate abruptly left the region, our Vice-Delegate wasn't in any position to be able to receive the Delegacy, and because of that it fell to a Guardian who took actions that concerned the legitimate government and many people in the region, myself included. Our entire security apparatus failed, and had this been a serious coup with foreign support it's likely that we would now be fighting an uphill battle to liberate the region and restore control to this government...a battle that that could have very well been lost. The thought of what could have happened is what compelled me to run for this position. Maybe we're lucky that it happened like this and now the problems are exposed so we have a chance to fix it before a more serious attempt comes by. I have to admit, I have no spectacular plan to build security, because I don't believe one is needed...what I feel is needed is some time and effort and personal care on the part of the person who is elected into this role. I've swapped endorsements on my nation in the region since November, to the point that I'm now 9th in endorsements without the help of any telegrams or WFE instructions to endorse me, and I'll continue doing that. I'll make it a point to be in position to receive the Delegacy should the Sovereign resign, while hoping that it doesn't come to that this time. I'll continue to be active here on the forums daily, and I'll work with the government and community to develop a process to check that our Guardians are reasonably active and able to quickly respond to an emergency in the region, so that the Cosmic Council has the best data possible when it comes time to reconfirm them. I'll look into what other democratic GCRs are doing to enhance their security, and I'll also work to build on the endoswapping program that Altmoras had some initial success with during his term as Sovereign. That doesn't mean that I won't be involved in other areas of the region too as a Citizen, but as Defender of the Realm my focus would be on security-related matters. I feel it's important that there's someone who makes that their primary focus in the region, and I feel that Constitutionally it's the Defender of the Realm who should maintain this focus...cause you know, it's a big part of defending the realm. Thank you for your consideration, and best of luck to the other candidates running for this position. Edited by Wintermoot, Mar 30 2017, 03:25 AM.

So your candidacy seems more security oriented. Would you seek to use your influence to assist the Sovereign in raising activity or other projects? Also, do you think an expanded role for the DOTR would be beneficial for Lazarus? By this I mean that the DOTR wouldn't just be a security measure, it would be actively involved in some activity affiliated projects. |

I would be happy to contribute where I'm capable of doing so, not because I would be Defender of the Realm, but because I think all Citizens should be doing that. That being said, I don't believe expanding the role of the position would be beneficial or appropriate. The DotR already has a vital role when it comes to regional security, and we recently got a taste of what could happen when that role isn't being focused on. If a DotR wants to branch off into other things and they're able to maintain a focus on security as well, I think that's great, but they can already do that to a large extent as a Citizen. Otherwise, I would rather have the DotR focused on regional security rather than spread out along a multitude of other areas. |

Because [region]Lazarus[/region] does have a history of Sovereigns vacating their office, I'll ask you the obvious question: What would you do as Sovereign? I'm looking for a Defender of the Realm who can answer that question, because they just might have to do so. |

Just to come out and say it, I don't have a specific agenda beyond the security-oriented focus I outlined in my OP, but I do have years of experience building and maintaining regions that I can draw on in the event that the Sovereign would abdicate their office. I once contributed some thoughts on those topics to The Rejected Times, even! If it were to happen, I would first see to the stability and security of the region so that we could have the best environment to have DotR elections in. Then I would evaluate the region, consulting the Citizenry while I'm at it (in Wintreath we occasionally do things like SWOT analyses, brainstorming topics, suggestion topics, etc), and based on that and my own thoughts I would decide what areas to invest my time in beyond the minimum responsibilities as Sovereign. Just as an example though, if I had to take office right at this moment, I'd want to focus on topics and activities to make people want to join the forums and keep coming back. I don't believe our problem is that there's nobody in the region to generate activity...the activity from these elections proves that we do. I believe the problem is that most of the time there's nothing for them to do. There's elections, the occasional bill in the legislature, a contentious WA vote once in awhile, and a bunch of government work that over the years I've come to realize people view as just that...work. Have you tried to get people to write articles or to recruit? At the end of the day, NS is a game, and people want to be able to have fun, or at least get something satisfying out of their regional experience. To me our inactivity is a sign that people don't have many things to do to have fun or to casually invest themselves in the region. I think figuring out what that is will be one of the challenges our next Sovereign faces, and what I'd focus on if I came into that office now. Edited by Wintermoot, Apr 1 2017, 06:44 AM.
