When it became clear that a special election would be needed, I spent a lot of time debating whether to run for Defender of the Realm. I've never seriously considered seeking a position of authority in the region, both because I'm already the leader of another region and because I felt that my best role here was to advise, as a member of the Assembly and later on to various Sovereigns as a member of their Cabinets. Suffice to say that I don't take this decision to run lightly. However, recent events have left me disturbed about the state of our regional security. Our Delegate abruptly left the region, our Vice-Delegate wasn't in any position to be able to receive the Delegacy, and because of that it fell to a Guardian who took actions that concerned the legitimate government and many people in the region, myself included. Our entire security apparatus failed, and had this been a serious coup with foreign support it's likely that we would now be fighting an uphill battle to liberate the region and restore control to this government...a battle that that could have very well been lost. The thought of what could have happened is what compelled me to run for this position. Maybe we're lucky that it happened like this and now the problems are exposed so we have a chance to fix it before a more serious attempt comes by. I have to admit, I have no spectacular plan to build security, because I don't believe one is needed...what I feel is needed is some time and effort and personal care on the part of the person who is elected into this role. I've swapped endorsements on my nation in the region since November, to the point that I'm now 9th in endorsements without the help of any telegrams or WFE instructions to endorse me, and I'll continue doing that. I'll make it a point to be in position to receive the Delegacy should the Sovereign resign, while hoping that it doesn't come to that this time. I'll continue to be active here on the forums daily, and I'll work with the government and community to develop a process to check that our Guardians are reasonably active and able to quickly respond to an emergency in the region, so that the Cosmic Council has the best data possible when it comes time to reconfirm them. I'll look into what other democratic GCRs are doing to enhance their security, and I'll also work to build on the endoswapping program that Altmoras had some initial success with during his term as Sovereign. That doesn't mean that I won't be involved in other areas of the region too as a Citizen, but as Defender of the Realm my focus would be on security-related matters. I feel it's important that there's someone who makes that their primary focus in the region, and I feel that Constitutionally it's the Defender of the Realm who should maintain this focus...cause you know, it's a big part of defending the realm. Thank you for your consideration, and best of luck to the other candidates running for this position. Edited by Wintermoot, Mar 30 2017, 03:25 AM.

What region are you currently holding an office in? Also, how will you prevent this lapse of security again? |

I've been the Founder and Monarch of [region]Wintreath[/region] since late 2013. I think preventing something like this particular incident boils down to having an attentive Defender of the Realm who is second in endorsements behind the Sovereign and making sure we're properly vetting our Guardians when we confirm and reconfirm them, and I've spoken to some of that in my OP. What disturbed me most about this incident is how little effort it would have taken to prevent it from happening to start with, given that the Sovereign peacefully resigned and left the region rather than going rogue. |

Thanks for the reply. So do you think the incident was a result of organizational failure and not specifically the DotR? |

The 'little effort' it would have taken to prevent 'this particular incident' was Kowassati changing the WFE to note that Doperland was now the Sovereign, telling people to endorse Dope, giving Dope as many Regional Officer powers as he could, and then patiently waiting until Dope had the 2nd most endorsements in the region before resigning the WA. That not withstanding, I think you'll do a fine job as DoR, and I plan to vote for you when the time comes. |

I think it's a bit of both, actually. Doperland himself has admitted he didn't do much in the role. However, because of the inactivity in the government and region nobody has been paying attention to these issues...the Cosmic Council has the right to raise concerns and to put forward a no confidence motion if the DotR isn't doing their job, and it has the responsibility of reconfirming the Guardians every four months. We all have dropped the ball on those things. Thank you for the kind words and the support. It certainly would have been gracious for Kowassati to do that, but we can't base our security policy on the assumption that the Sovereign will always do the right thing when a primary source of coups are legitimate delegates going rogue. The Defender of the Realm is not only an immediate backup should the Sovereign resign, but also an initial point of resistance should the Sovereign go rogue, and it's his or her responsibility to have the endorsements to be able to take on those roles, not the outgoing Sovereign's. |

Since you can only hold one government position at a time, what would you imagine happening to the Exterior Archbishop position? Do we have enough people for someone to fill it? |

What happens to that position depends in large part on the Sovereign, but even if it isn't filled I would say that it's probably the best Archbishop position to leave vacant as it's largely an administrative position. Actual foreign policy is determined by the Sovereign, and to some extent the Council when it comes to treaties, so not having an Archbishop doesn't effect those. If left vacant I assume that the Sovereign would assume those responsibilities, but I imagine that both Funkadelia and Loftegen are in the process of determining who they would want to nominate should they win the election, and they may be able to answer more specifically than I could. |

I don't want to sound like I'm questioning your loyalty, but in case of an emergency in Lazarus(Sovereign going offline) will you prioritize Lazarus over your current region? Also, great campaign. Edited by Unified Wakanda, Mar 30 2017, 11:37 PM.

Thank you! I take my roles in both regions seriously, and in the event of an emergency I would put in all the time and effort that the situation called for. If I didn't think that I could give the position as much time, effort, or focus as it needed, I wouldn't run for it. |
