I'm sure a lot of us play games, so I thought it'd be cool to have a place to talk about what we're playing at the moment and where we're at in it. At least we can get some idea of what everyone is into. For me, I was in the mood for something I don't regularly play, and after searching my lists I decided on Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, which I bought from GoG years ago but never actually played. Between having it on the easiest setting and my familiarity with Civ II-era rules (I used to play the shit out of Civ II), I didn't have too much trouble, though adjusting to the graphics took a bit of time for me. It was interesting for me, but at the same time I don't really get the hype the game had...it's a lot like futuristic Civ II with a better diplomacy system, and I could recall some Civ II mods I had more fun with. In fact, maybe next time I'm in the mood I'll see if I can get that installed and going on this computer... |

That's what I like about the sim genre...for the most part, they're relaxing, even thoughtful go at your own pace games where you determine what you want to do. I loved SimCity (though at the moment I think Cities: Skylines is a better modern game), and I also had games like SimFarm, SimAnt, and SimTower. I think it's ironically that they had such a hard time finding a publisher to put out the original SimCity that they had to found their own studio, precisely because there's no win condition...in fact, they weren't even originally called games, but 'electronic toys'. We've come a long way since then. The last game I bought full-price was Warcraft III back in 2003, I think...I've just never had the budget to justify paying $50-$70 for one game, so I usually got what was on sale at Wal-Mart, and then at some point I discovered Steam with their many sales and I was set from there. Plus the occassional gift from a friend...you're right, it was really lovely, and I'm lucky to have friends that occasionally do that, especially since I can't often return the favour. ;-; |

You and I have so much in common! ^-^ This is one of the times where I wish Sims 3 had a multiplayer option... And I don't think I've bought any games full-price, ever, except for Sims 3: Supernatural, when it first came out, mainly because I wanted the limited edition "Plants VS Zombies" stuff. I nowadays get Sims 3 stuff off Origin since it came with the CDs I bought. And I know the feeling of often not being able to return the favour, one of my friends got me Skyrim late last year and I had a lot of fun with that, and like nearly half a year on, I still feel bad I can't return the favour |

So it seems, at least when it comes to love for sims and our gaming situations! About a decade ago they came out with The Sims Online, a MMO that was supposed to expand the fun to multiplayer, but the idea of taking a single-player game and turning it into a MMO wasn't designed well and it closed up. I'm surprised that there haven't been any other big attempts though...I imagine that if they got the game economy right players could have a lot of fun building homes and businesses and creating new things for others to buy. Second Life is kinda like that, but when I gave it a try a few years ago it didn't seem very user-friendly and you had to pay real money to get land to build anything on. Last year one of my friends bought Civ VI for me right after it came out...on one hand I'm grateful because otherwise I still wouldn't be able to afford it, but on the other hand I feel greedy for not being able to return the favour. For years I actually hated accepting gifts from people, but eventually I relaxed a bit and accepted that they understood my situation and didn't expect me to give things back in turn. |

That sounds so cool! However, I figure that like the Paradox games, multiplayer could be done between registered users on an individual map, rather than one massive world (which would be a LOT of lag, especially at peak hours). Also could pull a Patadox by playing with someone who has the packs you don't have so you don't have to fork out And isn't the game ecoeconomy already going well? I mean, Sims games have a lot of sales As for Second Life... it was functional on the lowest graphics settings on my WinXP PC, but that was the only benefit! I mean people weren't that friendly or helpful, the controls were difficult to operate (I kept falling off cliffs), the free clothing/accessories were crap, and I hated having to fork out real money (like you said) to get anything good. Plus it was more a social game than a simulation game I felt, at least from my experience, so I'm not gonna try Second Life again I'm at the stage where I absolutely hate accepting gifts from people, may I ask for more detail how you managed to move past that stage? Sorry for bad typing on phone |

Sorry, I meant the in-game ecosystem. If I remember correctly, one of the problems with The Sims Online is that it turned into people clustered at places they could raise their stats so that they could get the money to buy things...I never personally played it, but that doesn't seem especially social or fun. It works fine in single-player, but the mechanic of doing an action to raise stats is a bit problematic on a multiplayer social game. I like what Second Life was trying to do, and I think it'd be awesome to have a virtual world that's shaped by players, but we're not there yet...if you have photoshop and scripting skill, you can make just about anything in Second Life and then sell it, but the program is clunky and unless you're doing something like that the point of being in Second Life is unclear. On the other hand, a game like Minecraft is simple to get into and fun, but it's much more basic in terms of what you can do. Hopefully a game that pairs both of those things will eventually turn up. |

I've mostly been playing Splatoon 2 recently, when I even have time for video games. Life has been hectic! The game is great though! |
