IN THE FIRST ELECTION CONDUCTED UNDER THE NEW MANDATE, Lazarenes have elected prominent community member Kowassati to be the next Sovereign, the Delegate of the Celestial Union, which is the region’s new title for its government.
In a sweeping majority result, Kowassati received excellent turnout, snatching 17 votes to the 5 attained by his closest competitor, longtime resident Ikania , with third candidate Prole Confederation coming in last, with zero votes.
The result follows a long campaign during a time of turmoil in Lazarus, as activity drops and clashing ideas are shared over the future of the region, its place in the workings of gameplay politics, and the way things function.
In addition to the primary competition for Delegate, two other elections were held to fill the positions of Celestial Being and Defender of the Realm. The Celestial Being is a lore-tied head of state under the new Mandate, who officially appoints people to positions and acts somewhat like a Monarch, though with little official in-game power. The Defender of the Realm is an elected Vice-Delegate position, serving as a vanguard in terms of endorsements and a deputy to the Sovereign in carrying out tasks. Lazarus also elected a Convenor, or speaker, for the Cosmic Council, the new all-citizen legislature of the region.
For the Celestial Being election, esteemed former Delegate Funkadelia won unopposed, after jumping into the fray to contest New Rogernomics, also a former Delegate. Roger dropped out before voting commenced, and thus Funkadelia won over three quarters of the vote, the rest being abstentions.
The election for Defender of the Realm ended up being the most contentious of the season, as ironic as it is that it only featured one candidate. Canton Empire, or Constie, ran unopposed for his position, and managed to lose out on a majority of votes, instead having the abstain option sweep him for an almost two thirds of the vote. While it would be improper for the paper to comment on the merits of Constie’s election, the result itself was challenged given the vague legal state of abstentions, starting a discussion whether one could be elected in such a manner as this, or if abstain votes count themselves as an option worthy of taking a majority.
Any real dispute was ended when Constie, in the face of a vote of no confidence following his disputed victory (before he could be appointed by the Celestial Being), resigned his positions and as a potential Defender of the Realm, Bishop of the Interior and NPO ambassador. He retains only his Guardian position. This sets the stage for a special election to fill the gap and elect a new Defender of the Realm.
Finally, the race for Convenor took yet another unexpected turn. Frontrunner Aumelodia just barely missed scraping a majority, but that wasn’t the end of it. Second place candidate Yuno didn’t even run a campaign and in fact, while accepting her nomination, endorsed Kondratev himself for the position! Kondratev was seen as a safe bet, before he resigned his citizenship in the middle of the race. You heard it here, folks.
The plurality result for Aumelodia resulted in a runoff vote between him and Yuno, in which he has won an easy majority, and while the vote so far has not ended, it is clear that he will win the position and become the region’s next Convenor.
With the results in and most positions filled, the region of Lazarus is ready to hit the road during the term of its new Delegate, who will have to face the community’s problem with activity, as well as clashing perspectives on our path forward and what the future holds. Below, you can find a table displaying all the election results.
