BENNY THOMAS SHOOTS DOWN ANDY ANUMIA, PROCLAIMED SHERIFF OF LAZARUS An exclusive picture of the final duel between the rival fellas. Benny Thomas in the foreground, as Andrew Anumia looks on in the background. BETHANY- What began as a small dustup at the saloon finally culminated today, in an epic gun duel at high noon between Benny "the Benevolent" Thomas and Sheriff Andy Anumia. As soon as the clock bell rang out from the Church tower near Bethany town square, the two gunslingers drew their revolvers and fired quickly at each other, with Andy Anumia losing the fight. This showdown was intended to determine the future of leadership in Lazarus County, one of the largest of its kind in the Sinker Territory, and an important frontier for oil tycoons, railroad magnates and treasure-hunting outlaws. A hundred miles outside Emerald City, in the historic county town of Bethany, two home-grown locals had their fates intertwined as they became the frontrunners for the Sheriff election following the disappearance of the incumbent "Starberry" Cassidy as she was riding in the plains near a Shoshone campsite. Andy Anumia, the Deputy Sheriff and a part of the Anumia family (fancy bigwigs east of the frontier in the states, with a monopoly over several manufacturing industries in the big cities), was appointed Sheriff of Lazarus County a week following the disappearance. However, county elections were right around the corner, and Anumia wasn't going to stand for re-election without a fight. Two candidates stepped forward. Benjamin "Benny" Thomas, often called The Benevolent, commands the Grey Frontier Wardens, a frontier-focused, vigilante justice posse, famous for riding through the plains in the dead of night and storming camps of outlaws, bringing back every bounty they took dead, even when life is an option. Their most acclaimed operation was coordinated by Thomas, who led a brave team of ranged cavalry straight into the stranded town of Hogwarts, starting a massive firefight with assorted bandits before the dust cleared and the town was liberated. While sometimes criticized for their passionate dispensation of justice and occasional lack of standards/mercy, many towns across the Frontier say they're indebted to the gang. On the other hand, a contender also came from Emerald City, the largest urban center of the county and a huge center of commerce in the Sinker Territory. Huck Loftegen, an oil baron poised to make his fortune off the Lazarene fields, stepped forth in a bowler hat and fancy moustache, bombastically pledging everything to the denizens of Emerald City, and making impassioned speeches about law and order, pledging to wipe out both criminal gangs and the vigilante Frontier Wardens. He found his largest appeal across the big business demographic of downtown Emerald City, where he made many a parade, attended mostly by chauvinists with top hats, pencil-staches and comical moneybags. The first round of voting commenced after a short period of campaigning, resulting in a large plurality in favor of Thomas. Andy Anumia simply couldn't catch up, as he visited bars, saloons and dives across the County with his entourage. Benny Thomas commenced a long ride across the frontier, stopping over in various towns and talking to the locals. He and his band of Wardens made an impressive sight as they strode through the West. However, he did not secure an absolute majority. Huck "Lofty" Loftegen was eliminated by the rules of the runoff, and sulked back to the Emerald City to plot his next business monopoly. Things got tricky as both candidates stopped to visit their home town of Bethany. It was also the location where the results would be announced, for fear of metropolitan mobs favoring Loftegen swarming the announcements and beating both candidates savagely. Bethany was a sensible alternative with mostly quiet locals, save the occasional drunk Irishman stumbling out of a bar. However, there were complications. Thomas was projected a decisive win over Anumia, but this result was rejected by his side, who claimed victory on their own. They met in the town center for discussions, but nothing came of them. The situation eventually got heated, as brawls broke out on both sides. The two men were swift to call for a duel the next day at high noon, where the issue would be decided once and for all. The winner of the draw would become the Sheriff, and the loser would either die or concede. The morning passed so quickly, and it was time for them to meet. It was twenty past eleven when they walked out in the street. Folks were watching from the windows, everybody held their breath. One of these fine young gunslingers were about to meet their death. Sheriff Andy had holstered a classic British Webley revolver, used before to deal with troublesome folk riding into Bethany and the surrounding areas. Its .455 shot had never let him down before. Meanwhile, Ben Thomas put trust in a very intricate and exquisitely-crafted LeMat, which he always kept by his side for dealing with outlaws. There was forty feet between them when they stopped to make their play, and the swiftness of Ben Thomas was demonstrated today. The Sheriff had not cleared leather fore a bullet fairly ripped, and the Warden's aim was deadly with the big iron on his hip. Anumia was slow on the draw, and hadn't whipped steel from hide when a .357 round entered his chest, leaving him sputtering and wheezing on the ground before dying in the cloud of dust kicked up by his fall. In the immediate moments afterward, Thomas blew on the smoke of his revolver and proclaimed himself sheriff of Lazarus county. Cheering was heard by both sides, who were simply relieved that the conflict between the two men was finally over. For the next little while, or til he gets eaten by coyotes, Benevolent Thomas is the Sheriff of Lazarus County, with the full strength of his Frontier Wardens to back him up. |
