Regarding Stability
Official Account from AU Parilament on Nevthronian History, 1980-2015

By the time that 1980 came into fruition, the north of Occasus was in a state of near-constant tension. Hawkwick was ruled by an oppressive communist government, led by the PWU (Proletariat Workers Union). Hawkwick and Artstotszka, despite not officially being in a state of war, regularly exchanged shots with each other in the north, on areas such as the disputed Korlun and West Luftberg island chains. Vandinium was ruled by Emperor Treven Von Stien, a good-hearted but simple man prone to violent outbursts. Due to rising tensions, Heimar had long since isolated itself, heavily fortifying both the border with Artstotszka and the one with Hawkwick. Hawkwick had it’s own problems, specifically large swaths of insurgents in the south demanding a democratic government, along with their more hostile counterparts in the north demanding Altic ethnic dominion. In prior decades, the government had cracked down harshly on associates of these insurgents and the insurgents themselves, however with rising tensions many had been diverted to the government’s largest military facility, situated on the strategically important Luftberg Island.

1983 Hawkwick-Vandinium War and Revolution

In 1981 seeing a huge gap in Hawkwickan defences after a string of terrorist attacks and civilian demonstrations immobilized the nation, Treven Von Stien ordered his armies into Hawkwick, going through Sadia while also landing several hundred thousand troops on the Hlymrek Peninsula in eastern Hawkwick. The PWU was taken aback by this, and the southern rebels took their chance simultaneously, attacking the government-controlled parliament while the flashpoint raged on in south and east Hawkwick. The leaders of this attack were Resistance commander Varin Lorik, who died in the attack, along with defected SM members Sergeant Hans Jensen and Private Rickard Jensen, government talk-show host and local politician Hinrich Reinhart, and over forty others. Although the rebels managed to displace the government and join with the Vandiniumite forces, they failed to kill the Premier, who relocated to the bunker underneath parliament and barricaded himself along with several loyal guards. The next year was a bloody mechanized slow crawl for the Vandiniumite forces. As they approached Hawkwick’s largest city, Altberg, and the new capital after the former Volunruud had been captured by the rebels, the Premier of Hawkwick threatened a tactical nuclear strike against advancing Vandiniumite force from inside his bunker, right as Hawkwickan crowds had nearly found his location inside of the vast network of tunnels underneath. Despite being apprehended and killed, he managed to give the go-order for the launch at the last minute, launching an ICBM from Luftberg which was stopped mid-flight by Free Hawkwickan missile defence, but at a cost. The missiles destroyed the thrusters on the missile, but also the MIRV arming mechanism housed within the warhead, causing the debris of the missile carrying the warheads to fall intact into a field 1.2 km away from Altberg city limits, detonating in mid-air and flattening Hawkwick’s crown jewel in a two megaton blast.

Fallout and Aftermath

In early 1983, Hans Jensen was elected the first president of the Republic of Hawkwick in one of the first near-unanimous votes in Hawkwickan history, and immediately sued for peace with Vandinium, a notion which the Emperor quickly accepted. The loss of Altberg had been devastating for Hawkwick, and unrest was growing again, offtimes directed at the former Resistance for letting the nuclear device launch in the first place. In an effort to pacify the naysayers, which could potentially be deadly for an infant nation, the newly reinstated High Parilament, now housed in Volunruud, dictated that construction of a successor city to Altberg would be built as close as possible to the old site without encountering fallout, and that this city would be the new capital upon it’s completion. In 1986, the majority of rebuilding was finished, however New Altberg was barely a set of foundations, and the various new military installations that were to be constructed by 1990, most notably the militarization of Blackhorn Island and creation of National Army Command, were barely off of the drawing board, due to the projects having been underfunded. It was in this time that Hans Jensen became friends with Emperor Treven, introducing him to his future wife, Elise, who was a general serving in one of the semi-independent areas of south Vandinium. Shortly afterwards, the escalation of several long-ongoing disease epidemics in the north had General Cessius of Vandinium relinquish leadership of Blackwatch, an elite group of soldiers which had held Vandinium against foreign invaders for thousands of years in the past and fought as a military unit during the Great Nevthronian War. Blackwatch had opportunistic leadership, which led to a swift acquisition of power. By 1984, Treven had been captured and essentially turned into a Blackwatch puppet. Tensions were escalating quickly, and with the dismal state of the Hawkwickan military at the time, Hawkwick initiated a draft.

First Blackwatch War

In late 1991, after nearly a decade of stunted rearmament, the Hawkwickan National Army was caught by surprise when Blackwatch troops invaded through mountain passes in Sadia and the southern Koerpergroesse Mountains on the Heimar-Hawkwick border. Due to the decades long expectation that any aggression from Vandinium would come from directly south, as they had in 1983, as well as additional resources being diverted to constructing the massive Blackhorn installation, not many troops were stationed at the attacked areas, leading to Blackwatch performing a full encirclement and forcing the inexperienced soldiers manning the southern border to surrender, alongside their weapons and vehicles. This influx of (at the time) high-tech equipment using Hawkwickan IFF nodes led to huge strides for Blackwatch forces. Eventually, the entirety of free Hawkwick was isolated to the Blackhorn and Luftberg islands, and the government collapsed. The remaining politicians set up a new body, the Free Republic of Hawkwick, and slowly began making strides against Blackwatch as infighting began within their ranks. The interim government set up by Blackwatch, largely made up of opportunist fascists and other authoritarian groups, was taken down in 1993, in a special forces raid that reportedly involved the president of Hawkwick, Hans Jensen, himself. A concurrent rebellion in Vandinium led by a freed Treven and his wife caused Blackwatch to be driven underground, where they began two insurgencies, one in south Hawkwick, and one in southern and southwestern Vandinium, For the moment, the world was free of them.

Reformations

The Free Republic spent the rest of the decade rebuilding, however it was hampered by an inefficient governmental structure. The constitution had many laws that were put in place simply to combat Blackwatch, and many provided a barrier to more peaceful proceedings because of this. As such, it was decreed in 1997 by Prime Minister Hans Jensen that on January 1st, 2000, the turn of the millennium, Hawkwick’s government was to receive a substantial reformation. His plans were realized, and on the date decreed, the United Republic of Hawkwick was born, featuring a much more neutral constitution and a penchant for military spending. This included Hawkwick’s most infamous armed force, HARM, then known as HARMFOR (Hawkwick ARMed FORces), which used their newfound military spending to quickly finish the Blackhorn installation and bolster it with advanced a defences that remain classified to this day. HARM also built or built-up a multitude of military installations across Hawkwick and Hawkwick’s waters, making it the nation with the most military installations by square kilometer by 2005. The rest of the decade was relatively quiet in both nations, and tensions stayed relatively low. Both economies developed in this time. In 2010, Hans Jensen stepped down after almost thirty years of Presidency, stating that he had ‘overstayed his merit and welcome’, and that Hawkwick needed ‘new blood’ in office. Arnkell Erikson was elected in his place after a lengthy election season.

2012-2015 Flashpoint

Under Erikson, the structure under the government underwent some controversial changes. Among them was the implementation of the Dragon and Wyvern networks, two HUD and Internet uplink networks designed to link into any HARM vehicles, helmets and goggles, and to be used by law enforcement and intelligence all over Hawkwick to better transmit high-quality data at acceptable speeds. Some regarded the network as a breach of privacy, especially since the more-civilian oriented Wyvern network had Hawkwickan ISPs agreeing to feed data back to the government. The controversy stopped when, in early 2012, the Wyvern network was militarized, serving as a domestic-only, logistics based communications network as opposed to the orders and combat-based Dragon network.
Supreme Commander of HARM, Erik Matterhorn had warned of a possible civil war in Vandinium, noting the strained relationship between the Emperor of Vandinium, Treven Von Stien, and his wife, Elise Von Stien, especially among the rising Blackwatch paranoia, or, in some cases, sentiment in the western regions of Vandinium. This came to a climax in summer 2012, when Elise amassed civilian militias and attacked Treven’s forces whilst they were idle. This move seemed very odd to Hawkwickan and other international intelligence agencies.
General Matterhorn thought the civil war was staged by Blackwatch in an effort to create instability so that they could take control. HARM entered Vandinium on 2 June, in Operation Order. Initial results were in HARM's favor, with Elise's largely civilian militias falling easily to the mechanized machine of HARM. In September, General Cessius Tessari formed a faction for peace. Hawkwick initially responded favorably to the action, however with the revelation that the faction was seeking peace through superior firepower, all diplomatic offers were withdrawn, continuing the war.

In December, a diplomatic envoy in the form of President Erikson of Hawkwick was sent to Vandinium to negotiate peace terms for the war, however unbeknownst to them, their arrival coincided with the attempted assassination of Elise Von Stien by Hawkwickan operatives, ordered directly by DRAGON Director Rickard Jensen, a move which had been meticulously planned for months. A Hawkwickan team sent to the capital managed to locate Elise and critically injure her in the neck but were forced to withdraw by the President's dropship being shot down and crashing into the palace. Both her and Treven were in critical condition, leaving their son, Fredrick Von Stien, to attempt negotiations with the survivors of the dropship crash, which included both President Erikson and former President Jensen. News of the attack on Elise, which was purported to have killed her, spread fast, leaving HARM to be forced to take Fredrick hostage after an attempted attack in the capital. Concurrently, General Marcus Notte of the 84th Airborne Division had been ordered to deal with Peace faction forces congregating near Karthspire, Hawkwick, which had taken several villages hostage in an effort to force HARM out of the war. While attempting negotiations, HARM attempted a trade, Fredrick for the villages, with the President landing to oversee negotiations himself, however they were all cut short by many of the Vandiniumite forces turning on both Cessius and the Hawkwickans, killing the President and former President, and critically injuring Fredrick and Cessius. Blackwatch then forced HARM out of Vandinium, along with a small number of Vandinium loyalists, which also retreated to Hawkwick. After receiving passage through Sad-States, Blackwatch turned it's eyes to Hawkwick.

In early 2013, Blackwatch entered Hawkwick and immediately met heavy resistance directly north of Karthspire, Hawkwick from HARM forces. This battle, known as the Battle for the South, lasted for two weeks, and was largely a stalemate. Eventually, the terrain was considered inadequate for prolonged fighting due to the very loose Earth and HARM forces retreated to directly south of Ostwind, where they rendezvoused with the 1st Shock Army, under the command of General Konahrik. A light defensive line of fortifications was set up around Ostwind, while Vandiniumite general Cessius, which had joined Hawkwickan forces after his own country was conquered, was given command over the 84th and 71st Airborne Divisions, which were lost in a surprise attack, during which Cessius fled back to Vandinium. The loss of the local airborne forces was a major blow to HARM operational capability in the area, and has often been blamed on Cessius himself, who Supreme Commander Matterhorn, as well as Parliament at the time, accused of prolonging the war. HARM launched a series of counterattacks into Blackwatch territory, with the final one north of Ostwind stopping Blackwatch in it's tracks and forcing them to resort to using the civilian population as makeshift hostages in order for HARM not to counterattack immediately afterwards. By November 2013, the stalemate in the south was still ongoing, likely due to the largely defensive stance undertaken by the Hawkwickan government at the time as well as pre-existing logistics issues with HARM that would have resulted from any further counteroffensives after Blackwatch was stopped at Ostwind. Parliament's initial negotiations were not successful, leading to some civilians dying in retaliation.

In early 2014, the Hawkwickan Parliament was bombed, killing almost all major government officials. HARM declared martial law and attempted several operations overstepping national and international law, including execution of war-criminals without trial and raids on civilian population. HARM then cracked down on the initial naysayers, leading many to turn against them, especially in the absence of a government. The initial bloodbath led to two more factions emerging, the Hawkwickan Nationalist Authority, claiming Altic-Hawkwickan superiority and a descendant of similar factions from the Great Nevthronian War, and the National Freedom Assembly, a fiercely reformist democratic socialist militia focused on rights and freedoms for all, two qualities they had claimed HARM lacked after Matterhorn's swift acquisition of power. From about June 2013, these factions, as well as several smaller ones, Blackwatch, and the Imperial Vandiniumite rebels had been locked in a destructive ground war, one that had attracted international attention from various nations, with NFA initially receiving and rejecting support from Imperial Vandinium, while other nations leaned towards HARM, with nations such as Artstotszka interacting with HARM in September 2014, during which they successfully destroyed Blackwatch in Vandinium.

In November 2014, HARM launched a massive offensive against the remaining Blackwatch, dubbed "Operation Hazard", while in the following week, the NFA received governmental support and an alliance from an additional two nations, Heimar, and Artstotszka. With the earlier destruction of Vandiniumite Blackwatch and Operation Hazard greatly diminishing Blackwatch presence in Hawkwick, the focus of the war shifted from south to Central and Northern Hawkwick. Heimarn and Artstotszkan troops entered combat against the HNA, effectively destroying them by 15 December, while HARM crowned Magnus II Ulfbert on 20 December. In early 2015, fighting between the factions devolved into a stalemate, leading many, including the King, to call for peace.

Markus Albrecht of Heimar managed to join forces with several HARM generals which were skeptical of Matterhorn's leadership, and assisted in a coup d'etat against him, successfully deposing him in February. This effectively ended all fighting in Hawkwick, with only minor skirmishes continuing in the Hlymrek Peninsula, the center of NFA influence throughout Hawkwick. The NFA was eventually crushed by HARM, and a schism in the survivors totally ended their credibility as a viable faction. Jory Hellhorn, leader of the radical arm of the NFA, was designated a terrorist after he intercepted a submarine and stole nuclear devices, while the moderate part of the NFA continues to rule Hlymrek today, with notable names including Janus Wulfar and Hinrich Reinhart. The leaders of Heimar and the remainder of Hawkwick eventually signed the Treaty of Zwickau, establishing the Altic Union as the ruling power of Nevthronia.
