The Japao Self Defense Forces
Overview: Though officially a conscript military, a clear divide is present in the structure of the JSDF's professional and reservist corps. Military conscription is poorly enforced by the King of Japao and the overwhelming majority of soldiers, sailors and airmen in the JSDF's ranks are career professionals loyal first and foremost to the Head of the Armed Forces. Conscripted soldiers and reservists generally are administered directly by the provincial magistrates directly under the the King of Japao. King Shinji Medieros' weakness and incompetence, however, have resulted in significantly lower standards and lax tolerances for the JSDF reserve component's true fighting capabilities.

In contrast, the Professional Army, Navy and Air Force possess the most motivated and dedicated individuals in Japaoese society; many are individuals strongly disgusted by the corruption, inefficiency and incompetence of civilian life and politics. As a result, more level-headed politicians have voiced their concern with Air Marshal Takai's increasingly independent "initiatives" to the King, though with little success in persuading him to take a more active stance on national security.

Equipment: Though much of its military arsenal is fairly dated, a strong relationship with the Principality of Ignatz has brought about the successful modernization of its aging Centurion Tank Fleet, M113 APCs and Ocelot-I Tanks to twenty-first century standards. Acquisition of Ignatzee active protection system (ARENA and Windbreaker) have enhanced the defense capabilities of the aging Centurion Tanks (upgraded on multiple occasions in the 1960's, 1980's and late 1990's) to previously unthinkable levels against anti-tank rockets and missiles. MEXAS-I, an Ignatz-based defense firm, has added significant amounts of composite applique armor to the frames of the venerable armored vehicles and tanks. Explosive reactive armor is commonplace and utilized heavily alongside NERA MEXAS kits, making even the oldest tank a formidable opponent on the battlefield.

Updated fire control systems, engines, transmission systems, communication links, and night-vision/IR capability have made the JSDF's venerable Centurion tank an undeniable threat to even the most modern militaries.

Royal Japaoese Army (RJA)

Strength: 350,000

Overview: The largest branch of service, the RJA is the nation's professional military corps and a well-respected military force in the region. Japao's professional army is well-trained, highly motivated and battle tested in a number of conventional and low-intensity conflicts. A 1954 invasion of Japao by a full-strength Khanate army was successfully repulsed by the RJA's armored corps. As a result, the RJA's emphasis on armor has defined much of its operational doctrine and it has a significant number of tanks for its relatively modest size.

RJA Centurion tank, 2010

The Morelander Centurion tank first acquired by the RJA in the early 1950's has formed the nucleus of Japaoese Armor. Constantly upgraded and improved over decades of service, the venerable design has continued to soldier on in the RJA with the assistance of Ignatzee technology and engineering. All existing Centurion tanks in the RJA's ranks have been heavily updated with the latest fire-control systems, ceramic armor additions, explosive reactive armor blocks, active protection systems, communications gear, engines and an improved low-recoil 105mm rifle gun. Despite being some of the oldest tanks in current use, the Centurion 104 (upgraded to modern standards) have proved to still be effective tools on the modern battlefield capable of killing more modern vehicles. More than 1,200 Centurions are in service with the RJA and have been deployed in low intensity conflicts outside of Japao.
