Hey!

So, I figured it'd be a good idea to put up an out of character thread for our current spat in the South Islands for better peer moderation and self moderation of our latest RP. I love writing military/political campaigns, so let's all agree in the spirit of goodness to focus primarily on having fun and writing some good, feasible RP with a minimum of godmodding. Moreland has been kind enough to agree to be the referee for the Japao crisis military thread. I'll put a few objectives and capabilities of Ignatz on the board for everyone's situation awareness, as well as some drawbacks to Ignatz' capabilities.

To better keep track of time-frame, let's add a date and time on the top of our posts. Example: 1800 hours, 1st of Feb... or 1741, two minutes after explosion. In older RPs, it was very helpful for the people I played along with during war/battle roleplays.

I'm playing foil to Los Vatican's ambitions in the small island nation of Japao - population (for RP and opposing force purposes) of approximately 8 million people living in a temperate climate similar to that of Japan. Geography is fairly hilly, with some light deciduous forest and pristine shores. It's maybe 80 kilometers from the closest Los Vatican island province and 200 kilometers from the Khanate mainland.

Background to Conflict: Disputed territorial rights concerning the resource rich waters between Khanate and Japao-owned land. Both sides have different borders drawn up on their own maps and claim the area for themselves. Historically, Ignatz has enjoyed good economic relations with Japao and is the primary source for their military hardware (explaining why Ignatz-made Kfir jets were used in the first sortie). Japao and Ignatz are linked via marriage - Aurora Capalla married Shinji Meidieros some time ago and is recognized as his queen.

Japao Military: Fairly centered on self-defense and maintaining sovereignty over itself. It has a conventional army of approximately 30,000 regulars and can draw on an additional 300,000 reservists in full crisis mobilization. The air-force is modern with Kfir and FA50 fighters, numbering approximately 150 combat ready fighters (90 FA50 and 60 Kfir Block 60). The navy is small, only about eight older-model (Mid-1970's design with upgrades along the way) frigates, ten corvettes and a few patrol boats.

Tanks: 150 Ocelot-1 tanks, ex-Ignatz surplus purchased in 1980's.
APC: 600 M113A3 armored personnel carriers
Artillery: 130 towed pieces
Aircraft: 150 total - 90 newer FA50 (comparable to block 52 and 60 F-16s) and 60 Kfir.

Japao Pros
:
1) Air Defense and Anti-Ship missile batteries - approximately 90 Patriot anti-air/anti-missile defense system launchers on the island. 60 Harpoon anti-ship missile launchers in 4 dedicated anti-ship units (truck towed). Good radar and communications equipment (missiles and radar/coms equip are of Ignatz design).
2) Anti-tank missile launchers are quite common at the company level.
3) Good air force pilots.
4) Complete Mobilization of all emergency reserves can occur in seven days (roughly 40,000 reservists activated per day)

Cons
1) Very close to Los Vatican. Japao is literally only 70 km from a large Khanate island and 200 kilometers from the Khanate mainland
2) Kfir is used primarily as a high speed interceptor/fighter bomber - very fast, but harder to control in a dog fight when compared to more recent aircraft.
3) Small navy - 7 frigates (mid 70's build modernized to current status), 10 corvettes.
4) Armored units are reliable but dated, likely vulnerable to most missiles and contemporary MBTs.

=====================================================
Ignatz

Current Force Deployed: 2 Strategic Sealift Vessels, 1 air defense destroyer, 2 Frigates, 1000 Royal Marines w/ light vehicles to arrive in Japao (likely 7-8 days from Ignatz to Japao). 20 mobile anti-air missile carriers and 20 anti-tank destroyers (command cars equipped with AT missiles)

Expected Contributions: 100 Kfir jets to taken from storage and transferred to Japao military (likely 3-4 days needed to take out of storage and plan route).

Tangibles
Pros:
- Good Navy, air defense/anti-submarine warfare capability of ships is superb.
- Royal Marines are considered "elite" infantry from ISDF
- Very good anti-tank capability, infantry will be operating with Spike and Milan anti-tank missiles.
- Theoretically can send additional fighter squadrons to Japao homeland.

Cons
- Limited ability to project additional men to the area.
- Limited ability to send additional ships to the area.
- Political and logistics challenges make it unlikely that reservists will be mobilized and deployed overseas.
- Long distance between Ignatz and Japao makes naval resupply difficult.

Alright, here's some info on my forces and political motivations, just to go with everyone else's.

The current Altic Observational Force's presence in the area can be explained by three primary motivations:

-To build a sphere of influence in south Ortus (in order to enable more efficient searching for Hawkiwckan terrorists hiding in this area, more on this later.),
-To assess the military capability of the nations involved; and update stagnated intelligence on the political situation in the area
-To benefit from and exploit any conflict that occurs.

Current Force:

-1 Jensen-class Nuclear Supercarrier (RAV Revenant)
--- 2,000 Royal Altic Marines
--- 75 KSK Operators (Prepared for Deep Cover)
--- 45 K-77N Interceptor Aircraft
---15 KB-77N Attack Aircraft
---15 AH-24N Attack Helicopters
---20 NH-2T Utility Helicopters
---5 SH-2T Anti-Submarine Helicopters
---5 Unmarked JH-2 Helicopters
---50 AW-142 Amphibious IFVs
--- Various Light Vehicles (Based off HMMVW or M-ATV)

-2 Reinhart-class Stealth Submarines (RAV Reinhart, RAV Thorne)
---30 total IRBMs aboard

Advantages:

- Excellent Commanding Officer, Fleet Admiral Harrison Karivik is a multi-war decorated veteran.
- Excellent Special Forces, including a veteran KSK detachment from the RAA, which have the capability to be inserted undercover or conduct false-flag attacks at will. Any links the troops have to the Altic Union are considered 'untraceable', in the short term at least.
- Excellent K-77N Interceptor Aircraft, operating off of the latest upgrade package (see here)
- Experienced Crew, most veterans of the Altic-Vandinium War, and some veterans of the Hawkwickan Civil War
- Submarines deployed to the area have the capability of targeting all relevant short-range targets with either the conventional or nuclear option.
- Well-armored (see here) and well-armed troops may lead to an advantage in infantry combat against any local force, on the individual level.
- Well-armored and armed IFVs and light-vehicles, including amphibious MRAPs.
- Durable helicopters and aircraft, particularly the 5 Unmarked Deep Cover Helicopters.
- All relevant assets are linked by a GPS network which records various combat statistics, including helmet camera feed, rounds fired, position, fuel consumption, etc. Rudimentary HUDs mounted in helmets and goggles. May lead to a tactical advantage against local forces.
- High frequency of thermal or FLIR optics among infantrymen, and in helmets. All soldiers are night-combat capable, and all possess a suppressor, IR laser, and IR strobe.
- Addtional, specialized types of Altic aircraft can be launched to support this mission from various locations, including Renoveria, Vandinium, and Artstotszka.

Disadvantages:

- Limited ability to send additional assets of any sort to the AO. A full re-mobilization of the Second Fleet is underway but it would take upwards of a month for the ships to arrive.
- Political Factors currently prevent preemptive mobilization of any additional armed forces assets for the conflict.
- No dedicated armor units, all AW-142 IFVs are equipped with 35mm auto-cannons and TOW Missiles as armament, but this may not be enough should things turn violent.
- Outside of infantry mortars and ship-borne missiles, no long range bombardment options are available to the Union.
- Extremely small (~1500 total combat-capable soldiers) force may be overwhelmed by larger forces on the opposite side if not used appropriately.
- Inexperienced First Officer, Aurora Forrester can barely be considered a veteran of the previous war.
- At least for now, almost all relevant Altic military assets are concentrated aboard the RAV Revenant.
- Altic Intervention in the Crisis may draw anti-Altic Hawkwickan Terrorists to the opposing side, including Jory Hellhorn of the NFA, who possesses nuclear weapons.
- The closest RAF airbases are situated in Renoveria, Vandinium, and Artstotszka. These bases are not currently mobilized but can be mobilized across the course of a week.
- Orbital Weapons Strikes are not permitted due to new Altic Legislation, although this may be overlooked by High Command.
- Altic Marine Helmets give off an increased heat signature on FLIR. This feature has been remedied in the most recent iteration of the helmet, used only by the Army as of now.
- Logistics may be difficult; ammunition, weaponry, and fuel is not standardized among all troops and vehicles. Relatively small amount of heavy transport trucks.

The OOC intentions of the Maddoman Empire in the area is currently

-To build a sphere of influence in south Ortus and to weaken the SoI that the DKLV and Gondor currently has in the region.
-To build military bases and refueling stations in Japao and a man-made island in the region to control the area.
-To expand the Maddoman Military Industrial Complex and to gain knowledge of foreign forces in the area.

Current Force: WIP

-2 Rein-class Nuclear Supercarriers
--- 8,000 Maddoman Special Forces (Maddoman Legionaries)
--- 90 MVFJ-17s Fighter Jets
--- 2 MVCP-18 Cargo Plane

Advantages:

- Excellent, respected leader who has military expeirence in the Maddoman Special Forces.
- Brutal Special Forces that are disconnected from right from wrong and will follow any command given by the Chain of Command.
- Highly motivated Malsonian Soldiers to the point they have their tails cut off to be able to join the Maddoman Armed Forces.
- Experienced COs from the Maddoman-Salonian Civil War
- Refueling Stations in the region, allowing for the Maddoman Navy to hold a strong presence in the region without needing to have another ship bring fuel or double back for more fuel.
- Military and Financial Support from the United Drazic Pact, Soldier's Union, Vinitsia, and Vlaskovic.

Disadvantages:

- The size of the Maddoman Armed Forces makes it longer for forces to be efficiently mobilized.
- Maddoman Legionaries are usually scared from the brutal moments they witness, which forces them to commit suicide or get into drugs.
- A very inexperienced Navy, which is dependent on Vlaskovican and Malsonian Veteran Navalmen Advisory.
- Little to no support of the Maddoman People.
- Racial issues within the Maddoman Armed Forces.
