Hey!

So, I figured it'd be a good idea to put up an out of character thread for our current spat in the South Islands for better peer moderation and self moderation of our latest RP. I love writing military/political campaigns, so let's all agree in the spirit of goodness to focus primarily on having fun and writing some good, feasible RP with a minimum of godmodding. Moreland has been kind enough to agree to be the referee for the Japao crisis military thread. I'll put a few objectives and capabilities of Ignatz on the board for everyone's situation awareness, as well as some drawbacks to Ignatz' capabilities.

To better keep track of time-frame, let's add a date and time on the top of our posts. Example: 1800 hours, 1st of Feb... or 1741, two minutes after explosion. In older RPs, it was very helpful for the people I played along with during war/battle roleplays.

I'm playing foil to Los Vatican's ambitions in the small island nation of Japao - population (for RP and opposing force purposes) of approximately 8 million people living in a temperate climate similar to that of Japan. Geography is fairly hilly, with some light deciduous forest and pristine shores. It's maybe 80 kilometers from the closest Los Vatican island province and 200 kilometers from the Khanate mainland.

Background to Conflict: Disputed territorial rights concerning the resource rich waters between Khanate and Japao-owned land. Both sides have different borders drawn up on their own maps and claim the area for themselves. Historically, Ignatz has enjoyed good economic relations with Japao and is the primary source for their military hardware (explaining why Ignatz-made Kfir jets were used in the first sortie). Japao and Ignatz are linked via marriage - Aurora Capalla married Shinji Meidieros some time ago and is recognized as his queen.

Japao Military: Fairly centered on self-defense and maintaining sovereignty over itself. It has a conventional army of approximately 30,000 regulars and can draw on an additional 300,000 reservists in full crisis mobilization. The air-force is modern with Kfir and FA50 fighters, numbering approximately 150 combat ready fighters (90 FA50 and 60 Kfir Block 60). The navy is small, only about eight older-model (Mid-1970's design with upgrades along the way) frigates, ten corvettes and a few patrol boats.

Tanks: 150 Ocelot-1 tanks, ex-Ignatz surplus purchased in 1980's.
APC: 600 M113A3 armored personnel carriers
Artillery: 130 towed pieces
Aircraft: 150 total - 90 newer FA50 (comparable to block 52 and 60 F-16s) and 60 Kfir.

Japao Pros
:
1) Air Defense and Anti-Ship missile batteries - approximately 90 Patriot anti-air/anti-missile defense system launchers on the island. 60 Harpoon anti-ship missile launchers in 4 dedicated anti-ship units (truck towed). Good radar and communications equipment (missiles and radar/coms equip are of Ignatz design).
2) Anti-tank missile launchers are quite common at the company level.
3) Good air force pilots.
4) Complete Mobilization of all emergency reserves can occur in seven days (roughly 40,000 reservists activated per day)

Cons
1) Very close to Los Vatican. Japao is literally only 70 km from a large Khanate island and 200 kilometers from the Khanate mainland
2) Kfir is used primarily as a high speed interceptor/fighter bomber - very fast, but harder to control in a dog fight when compared to more recent aircraft.
3) Small navy - 7 frigates (mid 70's build modernized to current status), 10 corvettes.
4) Armored units are reliable but dated, likely vulnerable to most missiles and contemporary MBTs.

=====================================================
Ignatz

Current Force Deployed: 2 Strategic Sealift Vessels, 1 air defense destroyer, 2 Frigates, 1000 Royal Marines w/ light vehicles to arrive in Japao (likely 7-8 days from Ignatz to Japao). 20 mobile anti-air missile carriers and 20 anti-tank destroyers (command cars equipped with AT missiles)

Expected Contributions: 100 Kfir jets to taken from storage and transferred to Japao military (likely 3-4 days needed to take out of storage and plan route).

Tangibles
Pros:
- Good Navy, air defense/anti-submarine warfare capability of ships is superb.
- Royal Marines are considered "elite" infantry from ISDF
- Very good anti-tank capability, infantry will be operating with Spike and Milan anti-tank missiles.
- Theoretically can send additional fighter squadrons to Japao homeland.

Cons
- Limited ability to project additional men to the area.
- Limited ability to send additional ships to the area.
- Political and logistics challenges make it unlikely that reservists will be mobilized and deployed overseas.
- Long distance between Ignatz and Japao makes naval resupply difficult.

Hey,
This OOC channel is a good idea, I'm here to make good story not to 'win' and this can help to clear up what might not be obvious in the RP itself.

I'm going to begin using time and date stamps so times can be easily found out, I also use the 'transmission' idea to concisely show what is being done, I know my writing may not be the best so making a concise way to show what is happening I find to be useful.

When writing my RP I assumed Japao was the Japan shaped island east of the Khanate, this is why I thought it very easy to deploy APCs around the area. By the looks of your responses it appears they are definately not and I assume it must be the small islands to the south west of the Khanate, correct me if I'm wrong. Also sneaking a couple of APCs onto an island would be quite easy with a night time deployment with a barge. Or even deploying from a known Haydatian military base. Either way whether Japao know of the activities or not won't matter massively, they're not in a position to argue:)

Why does Haydatia support Japao?

Well the enemy of my enemy is my friend being a big one, but also Haydatian influence over the area. Thanks to pressure from Haydatia, workers unions were legalised as well other reforms. Also the nation recently has had growing influence of The Japao Communist Party. But Haydatia has plans to use the workers and this party to stage a revolution in Japao, Haydatia won't be annexing land.

======================================================

Haydatian Military in the area

Currently only one company has been deployed in the area, if you've read up on my military factbook you know this equals around 1000 soldiers and a mix-match of several vehicle types, mostly APCs. This company will also contain some SAMs across the Japao coast.

But should the conflict circle out of control more, more soldiers will be deployed. The Haydatian military is small compared to the Khanate but it specialises in hit-and-run tactics and guerilla warfare.

PROS

  • Fast moving infantry trained in hit-and-run tactics
  • Fleet designed for movement of supplies and troops, supply routes aren't a problem
  • Support at local level, the common rural workers like Haydatian forces, movement through country side uninhibited
  • Guerilla fighters, troops sneak through the hills making them hard to find

CONS

  • Lacks heavy armour
  • Naval forces weak in a fight
  • Japao government only accepts us as they have little choice, would probably dislike our activities
  • Numbers of soldiers is low at the moment, Haydatian army is spread across the globe and is spread thin.

Just to be clear, the first post say :

“Japao Air Space
East of the Khanate Mainland

February 2, 1740 Hours

Contested Territory, Biscalis Area”

I am maybe naive, but so Los Vatican was really violating Japao airspace right ? Because as he seen determinate to say that it was in his airspace..

West of Khanate Mainland. It's contested, so in his eyes (Los Vatican) it would be his airspace but to Japao, it is theirs. Both nations lay a claim to the Biscalis area, though the Khanate would insist that all of the Biscalis is theirs.

All of Biscalis, the fishing rights in the area and exclusive oil drilling rights in the resource rich area. Los Vatican is less interested in the actual island of Japao than the fishing, mineral and oil wealth of the Biscalis.

As far as militarily, the Khanate is extremely powerful. It is close enough to threaten the region with anti-ship missiles and its long-range rocket artillery. It can also send land-based aircraft to strike at targets in Japao and defend its own sovereign airspace with ease. Resupply is pretty straightforward - it's probably a fifteen to twenty minute flight from airbases in the mainland and its prospective island provinces.

It has a pretty large navy with two battle fleets (IV and II) stationed in the area. Both battle fleets IV and II can respond to movements in area within a twenty-four hours and would be supported by coastal artillery (SAM and Anti-ship missiles),

The Imperial Navy is less experienced than other traditional seafaring cultures, but is very big. It's focus is mainly on defending territorial waters and supporting Khanate land invasions. Though on my factbook it says that there are six aircraft carriers in service, only four - the Vikramaditya-class carriers - are active and relatively small; they carry only 26 fighters and 10 helicopters.

Available Land-based aircraft (can immediately respond): 500 fighters, 40 bombers, 50 ground support
Fleet IV Inventory: 1 Aircraft Carrier (26 fighters on board), 3 cruisers, 10 destroyers, 15 frigates, 20 corvettes, 20 attack submarines, 10 ballistic missile submarines
Fleet II Inventory: 1 Aircraft Carrier (26 fighters on board), 6 cruisers, 15 destroyers, 10 frigates, 30 corvettes, 30 attack submarines, 5 ballistic submarines
Coastal Artillery: 2,000 SAM/anti-ballistic missile launcher units, 700 anti-ship missile artillery on coast, 200 long range missile artillery
Naval Infantry Numbers: 150,000 men - 5,000 amphibious infantry fighting vehicles, 200 tanks (upgraded T54 tanks), 400 artillery pieces (towed)
Regular Army troops available: 400,000 men, 3,000 main battle tanks, 2,000 heavy infantry fighting vehicles, 1,000 artillery (self propelled), 3,000 artillery (towed pieces), 400 attack helicopters, 800 transport helicopters. Out of 400,000 men, 30,000 are paratroopers and can drop onto Japao with planning and preparation.

ADVANTAGES
- Huge (as you can see, the immediately available military force is massive)
- Close to mainland, easily able to be resupplied
- Navy has advantage of being supported by shore based SAM sites, anti-ballistic missile defenses, anti-ship missile batteries, and land-based aircraft.
- Attack submarines are very dangerous and experienced.
- Air Forces are very experienced, combat capable and numerous.
- More regular army units and air force units can move to are in a short period of time by rail and flight. Even larger numbers of men, ships and material can be concentrated within striking distance of Japao without a problem.
- Artillery can reach targets deep into Japao from relative safety of the mainland.
- Regular army tank/armor units are very powerful. Korchin, Kipchak-3 and Quangli are well-armored and battle tested. Kipchak-3 and Quangli are outfitted with a hard-kill active protection system that gives it greater resistance against anti-tank missiles.
- Regular army's heavy BTR-T infantry fighting vehicle is considered an "extremely heavy armor" IFV designed for urban warfare.
- Reservists can be mobilized and incorporated into fighting force if needed.
- There are literally hundreds of Boghammar high speed patrol boats outfitted with machine guns and rockets that can be sent to support standard ships. They are very small, unsophisticated and short ranged but fast and dangerous in large numbers. Essentially, they are like civilian speed boats with rocket launchers.
- NGROM (Naval Group Reconnaissance & Observation Mission) commandos are elite naval commandos experienced in infiltration, sabotage, and demolitions maneuvers. Paired with Ogdei slave soldier corps (Elite Infantry), they can do a flexible array of special operations in the area with support from Navy, Army, and Air force.

DISADVANTAGES
- Naval Infantry is well trained, but relatively inexperienced with amphibious assault. The military has traditionally be known as a land power and is not used to coordinating sea-based invasions.
- Naval infantry receives less funding than the regular army and uses less modern gear than the Imperial Army. Tanks are updated, but less armored than the standard main battle tanks in use. Basically, they are updated T54 tanks with reactive armor and improved fire control systems. Naval Infantry Tanks still use the weaker 100mm original cannon and may be vulnerable to modern anti-tank missiles. Marines also use iron sights on rifles (unlike regulars), inferior ballistic protection (flak jackets from 1970's), older RPG7/Anti-tank weapons and are expected to take heavy casualties if invasion occurs.
- Armored Personnel Carriers are built for speed, mechanical reliability and ease of production. Lighter armored than most western equivalents.
- Regular armored forces can't deploy onto Japao soil until a beachhead is secured. Essentially, geography negates much of the armor/infantry advantage at the moment.
- Fleets (I, III, V, and VI) are committed to their tasks and would require at least three weeks to shift their theater of operations eastward.

So basically, we have 2 parties :
- Japao, Ignatz, Vinitsia and Maddomania;
- Los Vatican and Gondor;

Neutrals : Greater Yucadia, United Moreland, DEN, Morheim, Teutonic Union, Freechrist, Nurdilia, Artstoszka, Altic Union, Vandinium, Vlaskovic, Wahland, Renoveria, Solarmania, Ad Vitum Adsum, Wahles and Darze.

Would it end in World War ? Or will everybody make babies ? Will Nations be seduced in order to get involved ?

Who knows... :P

Caos, go RP DEN's proposition to Japao. Medeiros usually lets his military chiefs of staff handle matters of national defense and Japao likely would be interested in additional help, provided several concerns are addressed.

Per this post, Ignatz military commitments in the region have escalated. I RPed the arrival of several squadrons of Ignatz Block 60 Kfirs here.

Current military deployments:

Naval: 1 destroyer, 7 Frigates, 2 Strategic Sea Lift vessels, 4 escort cutters, 800 marines (approximately 3-4 days RP time from arrival to Japao), an assortment of tankers and cargo barges

Air Force: RINA 50 Kfirs on Japao.

Upcoming Plans (OOC) - Activation of one reservist division in Ignatz, deployment of 2nd Royal Guard Combat Brigade (2 Armor Reg, 1st Rangers, 1st Light Foot. Deployment of 2nd Brigade would likely take three days (RP time) with airlift capability.
