Japao Air Space
East of the Khanate Mainland

February 2, 1740 Hours

Contested Territory, Biscalis Area

"Two MiG29K, likely Khanate!!"the voice on the com-link shook in a mixture of excitement and apprehension, tickling the back of Lieutenant-Commander Shinji Nakamuru's head in an extremely uncomfortable way. "We've hailed them at least half a dozen times, Nakamuru! They don't seem to be stopping."

Biting hard on his lip, he gave a firm squeeze to Lysa's control stick and willed the jet's afterburners to full thrust. Within half a breath, the Ignatzee-made Kfir b60 accelerated to supersonic velocities, whipping past gray storm clouds littering the burning horizon and stirring the twenty-five year old pilot to feel the same rush of adrenaline that usually accompanied a supersonic foray into the unknown.

For an airplane built on a 1960's design, the Kfir was nevertheless one of the best-loved aircraft in the Royal Japao Air Force and one of the sharpest planes Shinji had the pleasure of flying. An Ignatzee adaptation of the Mirage III, the Block 60s had been essentially re-engineered variants of the original 1975 ISDF aircraft with the latest avionics, engines, radar and weapons management systems the Ignatzees had at their disposal. Yes, it may be a little dated and less nimble than the contemporary aircraft of the time, but it was a damn good at interception and packed a bristling arsenal of anti-air/anti-ship missiles that could cut down even the fanciest hunks of metal available.

It was also damned fast.. Lysa was already roaring at Mach 2, slashing through the sound barrier and making the typical contrails and wave front characteristic to a high speed death machine of her caliber as she screamed towards the offending MiG pair.

"Yui," Shinji spoke, peaking to his left and seeing the familiar sight of fellow pilot Yui Takagama's Kfir next to him, "Karambit missiles are a go, GC says the Khan's men aren't leaving and are in clear violation of air space."

He let off on the afterburner, slowing Lysa to cruising speed. Yui overshot him for a short distance before slowing down to match his stride.

"Hai!" barked Yui, her jet spinning angrily in response. "I see them on Radar Shi, they seem..."

Red lights flashed on his HUD, signifying a lock-on by someone's missile targeting system.

"Hostile! Veer left and fire!"

The BVR (Beyond Visual Range Indicator) on his targeting device had locked on to an unfriendly's radar signature. He flicked upwards on an arming switch on his stick, exhaled deeply and pulled the trigger. Karambit, a 4th Generation MRAAM, belched hard and flew forward to its target. A handful of seconds later, the Kfir pair saw a furious ball of flame flash up on the horizon and the alarms within Shinji's cockpit ceased screaming.

Posted Image

"MiG-29K down! I repeat, MiG-29K down!"

A MRAAM from Yui's Kfir shot forward just as soon as he finished his last word, screaming as it found its way to its target. The second MiG clearly hadn't been expecting any sort of retaliation and was slashed out from the sky with an equally impressive belch of flame. Shinji shook his head, pleased at having done his job well but fearful for what could come next.

"Make that two!" came Yui's excited voice. She seemed positively giddy with adrenaline, undoubtedly bouncing off the walls of her Kfir's cockpit.

"Maybe they were dicking around... But why the missile lock? Stupid bastards.."

Lysa made a sharp quarter turn, signaling its partner with a wobble of its wings to follow after.

Whatever the reason for the MiG pair's incursion into Japao air space, the exchange had turned bloody.. and war would likely ensue.

"God help us all.." thought Shinji.

MESSAGE FROM PRINCE ROBERT OF UNITED MORELAND TO LOS VATICAN AND JAPAO

It had been our nations hope that the investigation we carried out would form the basis of a lasting agreement regarding the situation. This however has not been the case and we have seen much political wrangling that has inflamed the situation, including the involvement of outside parties and their military.

We would like once again to offer HMS Sharpe as a place for negotiations as requested by Guyuk Khan. These talks to be attended by myself, Guyuk Khan and His Majesty Shinji Medeiros would be aimed at settling a permanent deal in order to bring an end to this business. I would therefore like to suggest as a starting point the following measures.

1. Both sides to pull back a minimum of 10km from the internationally recognised territorial water limits between your countries. HMS Sharpe will take up position in this newly created "Buffer zone"

2. A fully explanation be provided regarding the suspect radio information in return Flt.Lt Yuki Takai to be handed into United Moreland custody.

3. Both sides to sign documents recognising the territorial integrity of the others as well as a non-aggression treaty.

4. A further agreement to be put in place permitting United Moreland to observe territorial integrity at random intervals for a period of 24 months to ensure measures outlined in the investigation are being implemented.

5. Upon conclusion of talks Flt.Lt Yuki Takai to be released into the care of Japao.

All measures are open for negotiation, my experience however tells me it is best to start with some points rather than a blank piece of paper. Should the discussion be agreed upon I shall dispatch an aircraft from HMS Sharpe to transport you both aboard, thus ensuring no military assets from either nation need approach HMS Sharpe ensuring the buffer zones integrity.

In hopes of peace

I find these talking points above to be acceptable, but I wish to add two other topics of interest to the table.

1) The unjust machinations of Maddomania's Vinitsian lapdogs in attempting to slander our economic well-being with the rest of the world (currently of no major consequence, but annoying nonetheless).

2) The massive sale of the Minutos anti-ballistic missile shields to Japao, paired with the USS-DEN military buildup in the region is a major threat to Khanate national security. The Khanate had no prior contact with the USS-DEN before it so treacherously decided to seize Khanate merchant ships operating near their territory and enact a so-called embargo. Impressive as Minutos is, we have misgivings on how the Kingdom of Japao will deploy them in the future.

3) The Kingdom of Japao's excessive decadence with regard to the regional trafficking of illicit drugs and human beings has not gone unnoticed by our region. We have condemned the island nation for years over its libertine policies that seem to encourage the sale of recreational narcotics in east Audaxia, all of which affect our frontier regions for the worse.

Communiqué of The Doge Office

- Following the deployment of DEN troops on Japao soil, being concerns about such deployment by the meaning of the current forces in the region, knowing that such impressive military deployment wouldn't bring peace, also being concern about the intentions and the trust we have in DEN, La Legione Del Doge troops based in Japao shall be evacuated during the week in order to re-equilibrate the forces in the region, as the Merchant Republic refuse to participate to an escalation to war. The ICBM System that have been expected to be deploy will not.

The Vinitsian delegates still present on HMS Sharpe have been ordered to continue to negotiate a possible peaceful ending to this Crisis, as it always have been their order, by a Treaty of borders recognition and of Official Recognition of The Kingdom of Japao sovereignty, a ceremony in order to commemorate the dead in both sides of the incidents and the release of the prisoners. This is, and this was the terms we propose, we once more call the Khanate of Los Vatican to agree with these, and the consideration of the Khanate of Los Vatican as a threat and sanctions shall be ended.

Long live the Republic,
May God be with you,
- Doge's Office

NOTE : Los Vatican, ICBM System is the anti-ballistic system, and it wasn't sold to Japao, but was normally deploy by Vinitsians forces in the region, but it was cancelled. The Minutos missile is just a new anti-surface vessels missile (from both air and submarine).

As stated before, we will not deal with the Vinitsians on matters of our own national security. The Vinitsian delegation on the HMS Sharpe should flee along with the petty schoolgirls they call Vinitsian soldiers back to the safety of Ignatz, thousands of kilometers away from our borders. This entire event has shown the world that the Vinitsian 'Merchant Republic' is little more than a lapdog for the Maddoman Empire and a craven mongrel nation of fat businessmen who occasionally like to pretend they have some sway over world events.

Private Letter of the Vice Doge for Foreign Affairs to the Los Vatican

- May I remember to your Nation of uncivilized people that are the most bellicose, that if you have today the opportunity to talk and still be alive is by the willing of diplomacy and trust. Naturally, after insulting us like that, you pretend to be civilized.

We aren't the Maddoman Empire, well, we would love to, that would allow us to ask them to send their army and cut your throat, but we are civilized, and we only share trade, not bed. But I do agree, our military isn't very powerful, but it can make damage, heavy damage. And as a faith of our willing to show you, we will double our maritime forces near your borders, they will be under Japao Command, I am sure this pleasant gift we will offer them will please the most. Naturally, these submarines have last generation missiles, if you see what I mean.

We're maybe fat businessmen, but our economy is strong, we have a pleasant standard of life, we have prosperous trade partners, I hope you enjoy your life behind the rung that you could Los Vatican.

We were reasonable, we offer you honorable deal, and know that this deal will always be to your hand, if you change your mind.

Long live the Republic,
May God be with you,
- Doge's Office

The NH-2T touched down on the deck with a thud, and Commodore Forester hopped out the side as the helicopter's dual engines began to rev down with a satisfying beat from the rotor. She quickly strutted off of the flight deck and over to the elevator, waiting patiently for the slow door to open. When it did, she quickly stepped in and pressed the button for the bridge a couple of times for good measure. She pulled her headphones out before the slow lift reached the top. No reason for Admiral Karivik to hear her music. The door lurched open and she stepped out, examining the bridge for Karivik.

"Forester!" called out Karivik. "You've missed a bloody shitstorm. The Khanate spoke up, damn politicians are all shitting on each other. We're on our own, so I've been trying to-" he stopped as Forester spoke. "Will you reply, Sir?" she asked as Karivik quickly nodded, turning around to face the main control console with the map. "I suppose I'll have to support high command in this. And they have told me to drop all affiliation with Moreland. Don't want to take a pro-Japao stance. In fact, the only stance they want to take is a pro-Union stance. Can't say I blame them." Forester frowned. She had taken a liking to the Morelanders, in one way or another. "Well, sir, they did help us-"

Karivik shook his head. "Get Hellhorn? Don't get ahead of yourself, Forester. Our team we sent to secure Hellhorn can't get him anymore. The moron stumbled into Japaonese Waters to pick up one of his men from some sort of ground-operation, and then proceeded to get his ass captured by the Japaonese Military." he said matter-of-factly. Aurora's eyes lit up in surprise. "How...can we get him? What does that Reinhart think about this?" she asked. Karivik scoffed. "That DRAGON moron flew off last night again. I really hope I don't see him again. As for Hellhorn--I suppose I'll have to write yet another strongly worded letter."

SENT to the HMS Sharpe

Jory Hellhorn watched as the men boarded his yacht and rounded up his crew. Varik had gone out for a smoke break and had come down first, and the rest on the inside had followed suit by dropping their weapons, if they had any. There were twenty-two of them in total, not counting their newfound acquaintance. His detainment alongside them at least served as proof he wasn't attempting to double-cross them as well. He'd had enough of that. Not that he didn't have other problems. The Japaonese had found him, probably because of Varik's stunt in the bar. They'd even spilled his drink in the commotion, and that didn't improve his mental situation, either. They'd probably be pleased to find the large stash in the hold of assault and sniper rifles, military gear, and even some MANPAD's, leftovers from the war of two years past that had been brought over, some by sheer luck.

Then came the bald man. He listened a bit, catching his words. Moreland was a much better entity to be arrested by than the Union, that was for sure, at least. Not that the Union wouldn't eventually catch wind of this, he was sure they would. And then, the man recognized him, throwing the nice little 'of HARM' at the end. Lovely misinformation. He debated going along with the charade but knew that eventually someone would correct the man, and that wouldn't do either of them any good. Perhaps it was a test, or some other stupid mind-game. "Of HARM? Do I look like a soldier? More like of the National Freedom Assembly of Hlymrek, mate. If you want to talk to someone from HARM--" he stopped, pointing out towards the horizon, near where his people had seen the plane. "You'll be wanting to talk to their little cousin, the Royal Altic Navy."

He wiped his slightly bloodied nose. The rifle butts hadn't missed him, or his sunglasses, which were now hanging half down his face, revealing his icy blue eyes. "As for my passport, I'm afraid I haven't owned one in my entire life. Can't say the same for the rest of my crew--" he paused. "That's besides the point. My point is that-" he said nonchalantly before he held his hands up suddenly, as if being held up at gunpoint. "You got me! Congratulations! What do you want for a prize?" he smirked, his face turning smug. "Stolen submarine nukes? The location of my base? Supreme Commander Narheim's sleep schedule? A stash of assault rifles? 1959 Koerpergrosse Ale? Porn magazines? I'm afraid only roughly half of those things are aboard this ship. I'm just a humble sailor. Er. At the moment. And at the moment, I think my ship's been boarded by pirates." he smirked.

[1] Jory Hellhorn has been charged by the Union with acts of domestic terrorism, acts of nuclear terrorism, grand theft of a nuclear device, acts of terrorism transcending national borders, murder, and treason. Whether he actually committed all or some of these crimes remains to be seen.

Japao Waters

Corao shrugged off the correction as if it were little more than a minor bit of unsolicited advice. Around him, the rest of Hellhorn's crew were systematically being "pacified" by the Swicks. Nearly all men had some form of bruising from the rough treatment and were bound tightly at the wrists by thick plastic restraints. The Swicks had already begun to "black bag" several of Hellhorn's companions by pulling dark cotton hoods over their faces and leading the men onto the waiting patrol craft.

"HARM, DRAGON, NFA, AU.." he ticked off the names as if they were items on a grocery list, "They're all the same to me, really. Nothing more than a group of arrogant and incompetent fools who think that Japao is a welcome sandbox for them to bring foreign agendas onto our tables. I'll take everything you've offered me, Hellhorn. That and your life."

A nudged his head towards a hulking Swick standing only several paces behind him, prompting the larger man to drop the NFA trigger man to the deck with a well aimed left hook to the chin. Hellhorn was knocked unconscious and unceremoniously cuffed, bagged and dragged away to a waiting patrol boat.

The J-OSS agent yawned, his pudgy fingers back to tapping on the frame of his .38 Special revolver. A stream of curses from a man distinct from the others quickly caught his interest, particularly the foreigner's choice of insults. Turning his attention to the 9mm pistol taken from the odd man's body, Corao's chubby face quickly lit up with an enthusiastic grin.

"Ah, Toverisch..." he passed the gun from hand to hand. It seemed serviceable enough, though he privately wouldn't have traded his .38 Special for the queer automatic. "I don't see many northerners playing 'Bond' in my line of work, though I must confess that your bungling attempts at subtlety helped us considerably in these past few..."

He looked at his watch.

"Hours. I'd be cruel and call you one of the worst field agents in the business - whoever thought it'd be a good idea to parachute out of a propeller aircraft when one could simply have passed through customs like any other sightseer deserves to be canned - but it would be impolite considering our new friendship with the USS-DEN."

"Still.. If you were attempting subtlety, you ought to pay better attention in spy school. A fancy bit of hardware like this 9x20mm pistol is a poor choice when deniability is a priority. I'm sure your superiors will be disappointed at this.. embarrassment of an operation."

"Be happy you blew your cover so quickly. If you hadn't, I likely wouldn't be doing this..."

He pocketed the pistol and pulled a bright orange taser from the inside of his suit. Smiling apologetically, the portly J-OSS agent pulled the trigger, sending 65,000 volts of electricity coursing through the twin probes embedded in the DEN agent's chest.

Noriko Ishi's office was large and comfortable with several luxurious leather couches positioned throughout the area. It resembled more of a psychiatrist's therapy room than the working quarters of J-OSS Chief Director. Seated behind his desk, the man contented himself with playing a game of solitaire on his desktop while he waited for his "guest" to awaken.

"There, there." Ishi called, not without a twinge of sympathy for the foreign field operative's run of bad luck. "You'd want to take it carefully now. Standard police tazers have a voltage rating of 50,000. Inspector Corao prefers to carry non-police specimens that not only can incapacitate a man, but induce minor seizures and.. unconsciousness."

He pointed to the coffee table positioned in front of the man's couch. To the DEN operative's surprise, there was a welcome spread of tea, rice cakes and a few slices of sashimi.

"You may not know me, Vladimir, but my name is Noriko Ishi. I am the Director of J-OSS."

Vladimir's head hurt mercilessly, the throbbing pain almost robbing him of his ability to think clearly. Even worse, he could still feel the pain in his chest from the taser that knocked him out. What on earth could've done that...? He thought as he tried to remember what had happened in the last... Hours? How long was I out? And where the fu-

"Oh. Right. That was a thing, apparently." Vladimir murmured from the couch, his eyes still closed. His head was still pounding, but it soon began to clear up. He listened to the man's explanation, and figured that was the issue. He could've withstood a normal taser, but that one was around 15,000 volts too many. At any rate, he was lucky not to have suffered a heart attack. "So, director, you treat all your guests this way?"

Hellhorn listened to the bald man. "Yeah, I suppose you're right about the incompetence, arent you?" he asked the man, glancing over his shoulder at the rest of his yacht while he momentarily drowned out the man's words, feeling a little optimistic. His capture here would definitely piss off the Union, and he supposed that right now, those little joys in life ought to be focused on. He started listening again, catching only the back half of the bald man's address to him, grinning at the notion. He wasn't going to buy into this man's words; he knew his own political value, as a tool to be used against the Union, regardless of what he or the true NFA really wanted. Since the disastrous loss in the civil war, the notion of a successful democratic socialist state in Hawkwick had all but dissipated from his mind, replaced by thoughts of revenge or thoughts of retiring off to some distant land. But something had changed.

He was back in the game again, although Japao had forced his hand. He began laughing at the man, finding the very concept that they would kill him to be amusing. "Hah! Do you really want to kill m-" he felt something hit his face, knocking his broken sunglasses off into the ocean, and then he was unconscious.

***

Admiral Karivik slumped over his personal computer in his quarters, scanning his personal emails and recent onboard reports as he listened to his music, singing along quietly. "'Cause I can hear you perfectly cleeaar, from heere..." he droned off, mildly in tune with the song. He continued scanning the reports. No replies from anyone yet. Figures, this is what happened when High Command intefiered with the original mission plan. It wouldn't be the first time either. "Elementary hallelujahs, Annalise's dulcet tone, Aviation, in the evening, I just can't leave it alooo-" he stopped abruptly. Someone had entered. "What the fuck are you listening to, Karivik?" asked the voice of Heinrich Adler, clearly amused.

Karivik turned off his screen and abruptly turned around. "Gods! What the hell do you want, Adler? I thought you died! How the hell are you still alive? How the hell did you get on my ship?" Adler closed the door right as the song ended. "It's not your ship. It's Aurora's ship, and she lets me go wherever I want. He reminded Karivik, referring of course to his rather obvious relationship with Commodore Forester. "As for my whole 'still alive' situation, I'll have you know that that little Jensen brat left me for dead, then proceeded to get her ass captured. Of course, her friend Reinhart disappeared off of the Revenant, as well. So that's up in the air. I'm their replacement, and I'm here to do my job properly." he explained. Karivik nodded mildly at the notion of Evelyn Jensen being a brat. Adler continued. "Which means starting with getting this damn Hellhorn situation under control. I'm honestly tired of hunting him. So if Japao doesn't comply in a week, I'm going to use Jensen's info to find Hellhorn's nuke stash. And as an anonymous individual, I will offer to trade these nukes for Hellhorn himself. Or else, I dunno, I'll blow something up. Not actually, of course. Well, maybe I'll blow up a field or something. You know. For the message." Adler said, scratching his head. Karivik had raised an eyebrow. "I can see why you're not in charge of the politics of the situation, Adler. That's a fucking dumbass idea."

Elso Harbor Navy Base, Elso, New Takorra, Artstotszka
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Despite the rather isolationist nature of Artstotszka, news still spread through trade, travel, and gossip. It was due to this that Artstotszka had received troubling word of the recent developments in Japao, and more importantly, rumored Altic involvement. As he walked down the stark grey metal hallways under the base, flanked at both sides by MPs, Admiral Bazenhov was alone in his thoughts. With only the thumping of boots distracting him from his nervousness, he had to wonder what this meeting was about. It was rare for The Empress to directly travel, though he supposed that the recent sacking of Viceroy Riley was to blame. Before he knew it, he had reached the meeting place, with the metallic sliding of the door bringing him back to reality.

The door slid back to reveal Empress Annalise, in all her glory, flanked by 2 members of her Elite royal guard. She gave off an aura of militarism and respect, accentuated by her trademark Silver Armor; However, the real source of his intimidation came from her reputation. A woman who had restored two kingdoms with the stroke of a pen, she had evolved far beyond her what she was at the beginning of her reign, a cautious and careful young girl. Not that he was complaining though; Unlike the last Empress, she actually used the Navy as something other than a floating wall that keeps foreigners out.

As the two MPs saluted and left, Admiral Bazenhov was left alone to face her. Snapping of a crisp salute, he cut straight to the point.

“Your majesty, you requested to see me?”

“Indeed Admiral Bazenhov, I need only a moment of your time. As you may have heard, you are being put in charge of Artstotszkan operations in the Far Hemisphere. While your track record has been nothing short of marvelous, You are being put in charge of the Empire’s first true Far-off venture since 1592, and as such you have a great deal of responsibility on your shoulders. Can you handle this responsibility Admiral Bazenhov?”

“Yes Ma’am”.

“I’m glad you have confidence in your abilities. A Cruiser, the Steadfast is awaiting you in the harbor. Once there, you will receive a more detailed briefing.”

“Understood, Ma’am”

“Excellent. You are dismissed captain.” Giving a quick salute, Bazenhov was off, his thoughts dominated by his intrigued interest in his new mission.
