Japao Air Space
East of the Khanate Mainland

February 2, 1740 Hours

Contested Territory, Biscalis Area

"Two MiG29K, likely Khanate!!"the voice on the com-link shook in a mixture of excitement and apprehension, tickling the back of Lieutenant-Commander Shinji Nakamuru's head in an extremely uncomfortable way. "We've hailed them at least half a dozen times, Nakamuru! They don't seem to be stopping."

Biting hard on his lip, he gave a firm squeeze to Lysa's control stick and willed the jet's afterburners to full thrust. Within half a breath, the Ignatzee-made Kfir b60 accelerated to supersonic velocities, whipping past gray storm clouds littering the burning horizon and stirring the twenty-five year old pilot to feel the same rush of adrenaline that usually accompanied a supersonic foray into the unknown.

For an airplane built on a 1960's design, the Kfir was nevertheless one of the best-loved aircraft in the Royal Japao Air Force and one of the sharpest planes Shinji had the pleasure of flying. An Ignatzee adaptation of the Mirage III, the Block 60s had been essentially re-engineered variants of the original 1975 ISDF aircraft with the latest avionics, engines, radar and weapons management systems the Ignatzees had at their disposal. Yes, it may be a little dated and less nimble than the contemporary aircraft of the time, but it was a damn good at interception and packed a bristling arsenal of anti-air/anti-ship missiles that could cut down even the fanciest hunks of metal available.

It was also damned fast.. Lysa was already roaring at Mach 2, slashing through the sound barrier and making the typical contrails and wave front characteristic to a high speed death machine of her caliber as she screamed towards the offending MiG pair.

"Yui," Shinji spoke, peaking to his left and seeing the familiar sight of fellow pilot Yui Takagama's Kfir next to him, "Karambit missiles are a go, GC says the Khan's men aren't leaving and are in clear violation of air space."

He let off on the afterburner, slowing Lysa to cruising speed. Yui overshot him for a short distance before slowing down to match his stride.

"Hai!" barked Yui, her jet spinning angrily in response. "I see them on Radar Shi, they seem..."

Red lights flashed on his HUD, signifying a lock-on by someone's missile targeting system.

"Hostile! Veer left and fire!"

The BVR (Beyond Visual Range Indicator) on his targeting device had locked on to an unfriendly's radar signature. He flicked upwards on an arming switch on his stick, exhaled deeply and pulled the trigger. Karambit, a 4th Generation MRAAM, belched hard and flew forward to its target. A handful of seconds later, the Kfir pair saw a furious ball of flame flash up on the horizon and the alarms within Shinji's cockpit ceased screaming.

"MiG-29K down! I repeat, MiG-29K down!"

A MRAAM from Yui's Kfir shot forward just as soon as he finished his last word, screaming as it found its way to its target. The second MiG clearly hadn't been expecting any sort of retaliation and was slashed out from the sky with an equally impressive belch of flame. Shinji shook his head, pleased at having done his job well but fearful for what could come next.

"Make that two!" came Yui's excited voice. She seemed positively giddy with adrenaline, undoubtedly bouncing off the walls of her Kfir's cockpit.

"Maybe they were dicking around... But why the missile lock? Stupid bastards.."

Lysa made a sharp quarter turn, signaling its partner with a wobble of its wings to follow after.

Whatever the reason for the MiG pair's incursion into Japao air space, the exchange had turned bloody.. and war would likely ensue.

"God help us all.." thought Shinji.

J-OSS Headquarters

"Just the ones who come uninvited, Vladimir." Noriko clicked out of his solitaire game and straightened up in his chair. At sixty-two years of age, the J-OSS director was a short thin man with a thinning patch of white hair on his wrinkled dome. A thick handlebar mustache gave him an almost grandfatherly appearance that seemed out of place given his occupation.

"Corao likely would have shot you without a single word if he hadn't figured out you were from DEN, a testament to the man's meticulous nature but... I do admit he could have dispensed with the Tazer antics. He is a little overzealous at times, but his attention to detail and.. less savory methods of interrogation did 'persuade' several members of Hellhorn's luxury cruise to tell us a little bit about you."

"In any event, I don't plan on killing you. You'll find yourself unrestrained and free to leave after our conversation concludes. I've taken the liberty, though, to send an email to your supervisors back in the USS-DEN explaining the . As much high regard we have for your comrades up north, we are unhappy at having another airspace violation occur so soon after the skirmish with the Khanate. Small as we are, we do not take kindly to foreign organizations playing 'cloak and dagger' within our own territory."

"So, I must ask you and your organization to kindly refrain from acting in our territory without informing J-OSS of specifics."

"Concerning Hellhorn, I must ask what the DEN's interest in this particular terrorist and the NFA is - that and how this minor inconvenience can benefit Japao in the near future."

RJSDF Headquarters

"So it wouldn't be difficult?"

Air Marshal Takai tapped his feet impatiently as his personal attendant gave him the run-through over the latest details surrounding the Minutos missiles' operational capabilities. After finalizing the payment for 60 Minutos units, Japao's Military Research and Development Branch (JMRD) immediately set to work on devising modifications to better mold the missile system to Japaoese needs.

"Not at all," the engineer replied, "the MKVDS system carriers a large selection of 'submissiles' that were originally designed to track multi-stage Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles at the Mesospheric altitudes. They've been proven to be able to engage and destroy projectiles traveling many times the speed of sound."

"So... Satellites would be easy?"

"Satellites would be very easy.. Painfully easy, sir. All that's needed is modification to the targeting programming and a single Minutos missile could wipe out a ludicrous amount of unfriendly satellites with no chance for enemy intercept."

The Air Marshal smiled.

"What else?"

"As I said before, it's all a matter of coding. In addition to operating in Mesospheric levels, programmers could modify the targeting matrix specifically to aid in the ground bombardment phase. If I recall correctly, JMRD has invested significant resources into perfecting the fuel aerosol bomb."

That was true. The tremendous amount of oil production had resulted in gigantic stockpiles of crude within the home island. Much of it went into military weaponry.

"So, a single modified Minutos missile carrying thermobaric warheads in an expanded carrier vehicle would.."

"Be an effective non-nuclear weapon against the Khanate hordes. Fuel-air bombs dispensed in that magnitude would be able to coat hundreds of square kilometers in flame, sucking out oxygen from the lungs of those lucky enough to avoid the heat of the flames and melting even the most resilient armor to molten puddles."

"And against ships?"

"Molten husks surrounded in boiling seawater."

"Superb... Notify me when the first shipment comes, I must speak with the King."

"Knocked out twice in less than a day... Boy, do I have a headache." Vladimir commented, and stood up, straightening is shirt. He had to admit, that wasn't the smartest thing in the world to do. Still... He did enjoy it. For the most part. "Email? I haven't gotten an email yet. Then again, my phone isn't with me...

"I doubt you know me very well. You may know my name, but I'm afraid you don't know the full extent of what you're dealing with here. My name is Vladimir Istavaan Lenin. Karmarov is my twin, but he's in DEN right now. I'm SOCOM, leader of the SS, and frankly, a little pissed. But I don't blame you at all. At any rate, I'll take the time to apologize." Vladimir replied, and scratched the stubble forming on his chin. He carefully ran his hands through his hair, flattening it, then returned to talking. "Now that I've apologized, I'll answer your question.

"These men are AU terrorists. Terrorists, that is, to the Union. Not to anyone else, to my knowledge. Now, DEN wants to work with him to bring the AU down, and reform it. As to how it would benefit you? Well, you can blame the incursion on the Khanate, and explain that the Khanate is attempting to bring down the Union, and Japao. You can then release Hellhorn into my custody, and say that the Khanate agents have freed him. Or, you know, we can get you in a good diplomatic position with the newer Union after we change it. Other than that, no idea."

Admiral Karivik sat on a heavy metal chair, staring at the strategic map displayed in front of him, and at the Commodore sitting on the other side. Adler had decided he would re-evaluate his plan and had receded to his quarters to, in his own words, 'figure it out'. Karivik had been disappointed by the relative belligerence of DRAGON's Dragon, as they called Adler. He was an expert field operative, he had marksmanship experience, and he could go undercover almost anywhere in the world. But he did not know when to prevent things from going political, at least not in the context of Hellhorn. Now the Admiral was alone with Adler's girlfriend, the Commodore, in what was a decidedly awkward situation. Word of their little relationship was crawling all over Blackhorn when he had left, but she had not said a word to anyone. Perhaps it was for the better. They had other, much more important things to discuss.

"About Artstotszka..." sighed Karivik. Radar in North Vandinium had picked up a new contact earlier that day. A recon patrol off the coast of Vandinium had gotten visual contact. An Artstotszkan cruiser was heading towards Japao. There was no doubt about it now. "Those bastards have put a time constraint on our operation here. We better hope that they don't find out about Hellhorn while we don't have him, or this could turn into a serious issue. This was supposed to be a quick bag-and-tag, instead, it spiraled out of control, and that damn war started again in Vandinium..." he sighed again. "I'm going to contact them, Commodore. And I'm going to try and call them out. There's only one reason they'd ever get involved and we both know it. They want to fuck with us, plain and simple. Since that falling out between the Kaiser and..." he stopped, droning off.

Forester nodded at him right as the door to the bridge opened and Adler stepped on board. He shot a small nod to the Admiral. "Karivik." he said, going up behind the Commodore and putting his arm around her, whispering something to her. Karivik sipped from his coffee. "What is it, Adler?" he asked, looking over the operative. "New plan, Admiral. I'm going to steal those nukes back from Hellhorn. And then I'm going to get him back personally, assuming Japao doesn't give him over after their deadline. That part I'm still working on." Karivik shugged. "Good, I thought you were mad for a moment there, Adler. Feel free to leave whenever. Just don't take any of my men." he advised as he leaned back in the chair. "Suppose I'll have to send some more messages now."

ARS Steadfast

The message from the Altics was unexpected, to say the least. Bazenhov paced the meeting room, while his two Intelligence attaches sat in chairs by the planning table, along with the resident ambassador. They had been debating over the next course of action.

"I doubt they'd just up and leave if we asked nicely" said Jakob, the senior Moi Agent. His partner, Sasha, was quick to add on

"We could always threaten them, the 4th fleet could re-enforce us."

"Admiral Baznehov pondered it for a few seconds, before shaking his head. "No no, that would easily lead to an escalation of hostilities. If warfare is to break out, then I believe it should be the Altics who fire the first shot.

"What if we arranged a meeting? for all we know, they might be here for something not related to Vandinium?" Aleena added, obviously unhappy with the possibility of war.

"It's possible, but not likely. The Altics are throwing everything they have at Vandinium, and it's not hard to believe that they'd try to break Northern isolation and involved Easterners. I'll send them a message assuming they're here for war-related matters, to see if they correct us or not.
