Quite unexpectedly, a letter from Alturi would have come along and found itself on the desk of the suitable authorities within United Moreland... But the letter wasn't just from anyone. It was from Imperial Intelligence...

Grace Wallis-Campbell may have looked like she'd just graduated from University on the surface, and then probably with a degree in something like Literature, but beneath she was a tough operator, she'd left school at 16 having taken her A-Level exams 2 years early and passed them with flying colours, instead of the route everyone expected her to take to Lancaster University she had instead joined the military, five years serving in the Royal Galgaters, a regiment of light infantry had seen her sent off for officer training within two months and at the age of 21 she'd tried out for the elite Light Scouts Commando Regiment. During selection she'd torn her knee ligaments and failed, she had been told the knee would never heal correctly and that her infantry days were through. She'd been offered a choice, a pay off and an end to military life or a move into the Logistics Corps behind a desk. She'd have hated that, sitting filling in endless forms to move one piece of equipment to somewhere else. It was then that a man with a pin stripe suit had appeared at her home, a Major Grant Bradley, a member of the National Security Agency, he'd heard of Grace's smarts and figured he could offer her something beyond flying a desk. That had been a year ago and now he trusted her enough to run with this. She'd entered the Palace an hour earlier and after a brief meeting with the Queen's brother, Prince Robert, she was ready to meet these people from Alturi. Robert had always been used for these more backdoor diplomacy meetings, it gave Queen Alison plausible deniability while at the same time his own military background meant he was not one to take things at face value. The Prince and Grace sat in his office ready to receive whoever was sent to meet with them. |

The person whom would be meeting with the Prince and Grace was... Unceremonious. According to records from the airports, he had flown in on private business. According to his passport, he was named Theron Mendax... And it was as such he introduced himself to the people at the palace. And after showing them his documents stating that he was indeed expected, he made his entrance. By all accounts, he was a fairly handsome young man. Clad in a casual business suit, he looked almost like a clerk. Though of course, to the people in the room, it was obvious enough that it was a disguise. In any case, he wandered up to the desk, and after giving the customary bow to the prince, he took his seat, setting his suitcase down on the table. "Greetings. You may call me Theron Mendax. It is a pleasure to meet you both. If I am to be blunt, I am quite surprised that United Moreland agreed to this meeting so soon. I expected there would be much mistrust and many questions through letters. Not that I am terribly displeased." Probably surprising both of them, Mr. Mendax spoke almost fluent Morelandish. It was accented of course, very noticeably so. But he spoke clearly, and he made himself understood... |

Robert motioned for his guest to take one of the low black sofa's. "Can I get you a cup of tea" Grace said picking up a rather floral teapot. They'd both given each other knowing glances at the use of Morelandish, a language not often seen beyond their island. "I must say Mr.Mendax, that's rather a good knowledge of Morelandish" the Prince said leaning forward in his chair behind his desk. "As for agreeing to this meeting so soon I'm afraid I don't see why its a surprise, you see until last year our nation lived totally surrounded with what my sister metaphorically refered to as "The Box" , as such we kind of made it our business to ensure our security, so when we get a message from a nation we don't know too well telling us someone has essentially sneaked into our country and then disappeared we take it a little personally." Robert said hardly taking his eyes off things, "Beside, if this was an official visit you'd have been meeting the Queen not her brother and an aide, as far as mistrust goes I'm not saying there isn't any, more the fact I'm intrigued." "We also find questions are better face to face" Grace cut in, "No trail this way, both sides have an element of deniability if need be, however clearly it would depend who this man is, what's he's done and what penalty he faces if he returns home, you see our nation has a strict religious moral code which we won't go against. However the more information we have the more chance we can help you." She smiled warmly. "So as my aide has kind of put it, what exactly can we do for you?" Robert asked picking up his own tea cup and taking a sip. |

Mr. Mendax did rather gracefully reject the tea. And no matter his trust, or the serious nature of the discussed subject, he seemed rather jovial and friendly, with a smile across his lips of course. "I see... I suppose I should not be terribly surprised that you have taken deniability into consideration as well. It does explain a few things..." He went on, before moving to snap open that briefcase, taking out a few papers from it, sorting through them casually. "I of course understand that you are all quite concerned. But you will need to recall that there is no guarantee that he has broken any laws. Nor that he will face any punishment. He has simple gone missing. That is all." He explained, being quite careful with his words indeed. Of course, tourism and immigration from Alturi wasn't exactly commonplace... Making it unlikely the missing man was there for entirely pure reasons... "As for my morelandish... Well, it pays to know the language of one's acquaintances, no?" He asked, before finally setting the papers down on the desk, having them face Grace and the Prince. "The man we are seeking is Kaius Leander. Third child of the Leander family." He stated. And sure enough, a picture and the relevant information was clearly written in the dossier he had produced. "His last known position was in the port area of Lancaster. If he has indeed broken any laws, then he shall be suitably punished once he has returned home, of course." |

"No offence" Grace said examining the picture, "but why the cloak and dagger, if the person has merely gone missing you could have easily contacted our police force and had them deal with the situation, I'm sure even your Police would have been in touch not an Intelligence Agency." "I have to agree with Grace" Robert said, "This Leander family must be highly connected for you to take this matter on rather than through conventional means" Robert stood and made his way over to the sofa looking at the picture casually. "So perhaps once we know a little more we can begin working out what to do" |

The man in the image seemed like a rough sort. Scarred across one side of his face, scruffy beard, generally the type of person one would expect in the military or somesuch. Mr. Mendax in the meanwhile merely gave a slightly nonchalant shrug. "The Leander family is not that well-connected. The issue at present, is the sensitivity of the information Kaius holds, as well as his actions in the past. Should he... Shall we say... Turn towards a less-than-legal way of sustaining himself, he might be inclined to share that information for his own benefit. Which, as you might imagine, would be quite embarrassing for the Imperium." Mr. Mendax leaned forward in his seat a little bit, looking straight at Grace. "The situation is much too sensitive to be considered any usual missing-persons case. With the information he holds, he might have been kidnapped, murdered, or considering his record, he might have decided to go underground and put that information to use." |

This was becoming more and more of a concern, Robert didn't like the idea of someone running blackmail or something from United Moreland, the nation had a reputation for being a safe place, crime was generally low and he'd like to keep it that way. That wasn't to say however their weren't more undesirable elements but they tended to be more concerned with drugs smuggling than international secrets. "So" Grace said, "I assume we're not at liberty to know what it is he knows" she smiled, it was worth asking but she knew if she was in that situation she'd not want to be passing the information over. "Perhaps though you'll be able to tell us how you knew he was he, and who he may been speaking with while he's here after all I'm sure you'd like us to have something to go on." |

Mr. Mendax nodded and hummed softly, a small and confident smirk working its way onto his features. "You might be. Though of course I'd have to make sure that you are a trustworthy person first. Perhaps over dinner, Grace?" He suggested, before chuckling, charming indeed. "As for how we know he is here... He works or if we are unlucky, worked, for Imperial Intelligence. At least in a manner of speaking. We keep track of all our agents, whether they are off-duty or not. We keep in regular contact with them." He explained. "For things to go on, let us see..." He said, leaning back and looking rather thoughtful. "Considering his background, he would most likely have been in contact with smugglers and black marketeers. It is possible he would have gotten involved with human trafficking rings as well, though we are not certain of this. While we do believe he might have 'fallen off the network' so to speak, we do not have access to United Moreland civil systems. And so, we cannot confirm where he last held residence, or if he worked somewhere." |

Grace had no idea where to start, the phrase about needles and haystacks came to mind. If someone truly wanted to disappear the obvious route would be into United Moreland, and then transfer internally to the colony in Port Moreland, from there the wilds of the northern continent were open and border forces were designed to keep people out not in. "Look if we're going to find him the obvious thing is we'd need mobile phone records, internet history, bank accounts and the like, however if the guys intelligence then he's not going to be using his real ones is he" Grace stated. "In the mean time we'll have the photo sent to all ports of entry and exit" Robert added, "We'll at least see that he doesn't leave, or if he already left returned. Meanwhile I think Grace here can have some of our boffins do computer weird stuff and maybe see if he has turned up anywhere on passport control" It was well known that every foreigner arriving had their photo taken by automatic camera when they arrived at immigration, Robert was sure they'd have some face recognition software. "So when did he go AWOL?" Grace asked, they'd at least need a start date to begin their search. |
