"Easier said than done, my lord." "And yet, I've sent it, haven't I? And for the love of the Gods, stop calling me 'My lord', would you, Strenger?" "Of course--Magnus." Today was among the most important days in history for the High King of Hawkwick, Magnus II, or so it appeared. The invitation had been sent for only about four hours, but he knew that at least somebody was discussing their arrival. He'd attached the dates to the same document, too - the Reception was to start in two days. It was a bit of a short notice, but given his schedule, that wasn't much of a surprise. He knew that at the very least, Vandinium's delegation would show up, if only because his sister would get them all to go. Artstotskza and the newly-liberated Heimar, always intertwined in Hawkwickan pursuits in some way, were likelier to send someone to attend than most other nations, but he didn't rule out their total absence; they had their own problems these days. But for once, his neighbors were not what concerned him - he wanted to meet the rest of the world, properly. He wanted peace to become prosperity, and for that, he needed foreign entanglements, foreign money, even. And, while his wife had tried to console him, it was rather true: his friends were limited to his Generals and Fredrick. He needed more people in his life above all, if not for friendship than for at least some sort of animosity, something that broke the repetitiveness of what his life had slowly delved into. Sighing, he laid back in the couch, awaiting responses, or perhaps his wife's arrival. It'd been a hectic few months. "More wine, General Jensen?" asked the servant, looking over the woman in the military uniform. She shook her head. "No. Go away." The man nodded at once, strolling out of the room awkwardly. Evelyn Jensen had been given the crucial task of testing the refreshments in the main chamber of the palace - a chamber that hadn't been properly used since an event she'd actually attended back around a decade prior. Of course, the team behind the drink was a different entity, one provided by a business conglomerate of local Volunruud cafes, breweries, and restaurants. None of that particularly mattered to her right now, but in her short tenure as a General, she'd come to find out two things: it was always useful to know who was behind everything; and that she was a shit commander. The second point's source had come out of desperation, and had originally been more of a symbolic gesture than anything - but with Arminsen's death, a lot of doors had opened up for her. And one of those doors was looking particularly promising: the door to DRAGON leadership, and by extension, a whole lot of finding out who was behind everything, A welcome change from field command; and perhaps more importantly, a job where she could rest, and let others do the heavy lifting. Spirits knew she was tired of that. She only hoped she'd end up in a more promising position than the last Jensen who'd held the job, Rickard, who, under Hellhorn, had gotten himself torn to bits by none other than Elisia Drainheart. Evelyn was glad that thing was gone; it'd brought only chaos. Congratulations, Narheim. she thought, remembering the official account of that fateful day. What an opportunist, Narheim was. Liquidating his friend, the Kaiser, and his barely-returned wife as soon as they'd proved to be detrimental to him? The media had painted him as a deeply flawed, yet deeply evil man, but she thought there was more to that story than they'd let on. The answers, at this point, were only a phone call away. |

Seeing Fredrick finally arrive, Magnus broke from the small talk he was having and made his way up to the podium, silently wondering where his wife was, and why she wasn't coming down. After a brief chat with the nearest guard, he took the necessary steps up to the microphone and coughed into it a bit to get everyone's attention. "Ladies and Gentlemen! Gentlemen and Ladies! Thank you, thank you all for coming! I would like to formally welcome all of you to our now-fledgling High Kingdom, and to apologize for the rather messy entrance proceedings. We underestimated the turnout. Usually when Hawkwick hosts an event like this, the same four nations show up-" he paused, eyeing Fredrick and the other people he'd actually met before. "-and typically, it devolves into some sort of conflict. But I digress. Those days are over, and I will do anything in my power to ensure they will remain that way. I have a rather long list of announcements to make, and I can think of no better place to make them than here, in front of what I can confidently say amounts to a large majority of the international community." he paused, noting everyone in the room, before removing a crumpled sheet of line paper from his pocket and laying it out on the podium. "Before my time, Hawkwick had long sought to be a world power, a colonialist, imperialist, interventionist force. My nation has either directly or indirectly displaced or destroyed thousands of households, in the last fifty years, even. The most recent ripples of this trend might be most recognizable to you as either the war of calamity we are just now beginning to heal from in the North, or in one of many smaller incursions, the submarine thefts, the Japao incidents, the list is long and pointless to list. My point, which I do believe I alluded to earlier, is that we will no longer be pursuing such interventionist actions, except under a very strict definition of 'dire circumstances'. Hawkwick will strive to be a bastion of peace, freedom, and safety." He stopped briefly, collecting his thoughts. "Additionally, Hawkwick will do everything in its power to integrate into the international community. This may include our joining in or creation of international organizations, including institutions such as the League of Monarchs. This gathering here is our first attempt, and it will not be the last." "On a...reconciliatory note, I sincerely hope that the other nations affected by the war will seek a similar path as my nation's in the international sphere. The north has been in a bubble of self-destruction, self-flattery, self-interest, and self-righteousness for far too long." he stepped away briefly. "I will be taking a brief recess, but I will be returning shortly to take questions and suggestions, and perhaps organize smaller-scale meetings." he said as he ran off to see what his wife was up to, in the upper levels. |

Eldarion listened in as the new Hawkwickian king explained Hawckwick's new outlook on the world order, and nodded as he made the point to be a non-interventionalist. Hawkwick had been the source of controversy in recent months, having seemingly taken no one's side but its own self-interest in conflicts. They had appeared to be on the Maddoman side during the Japao Crisis, but Eldarion had his own imaginations about why they were really there: that Hawkwickian "terrorist" whose name he couldn't remember or pronounce. Yes, that fellow who headed up the NFA. The security of the east had been shaken up by the west, with multiple eastern nations mysteriously collapsing, such as the Khanate and Morheim. Eldarion was in Hawkwick not only to sure up a time of peace for Eastern Audaxia, but perhaps to enter into a new partnership with Hawkwick, who was to be the new power in the west. As the Hawkwickian monarch took his recess, Eldarion's eyes turned across the room to his brother and new sister-in-law, Sémarë Sarëar. Gondor and Ascarenor had recently inked a massive and binding treaty of alliance, one that included a marrying of the two nation's royal houses. The East Audaxia Co-Propensity Sphere was its name. He wanted to get Sémarë on board with his parley with Magnus, so he motioned for Aragorn to follow him, and they walked slowly over to their friends, with Aragorn bowing at the waist to Sémarë and looking her directly in the eyes as he came up. "Greetings and salutations, Vicereine and Prince. It is good to see you both again so soon. I am glad that Hawkwick has opened itself up to international dialogue. I hope that the meetings will be productive and produce fruits such as trade agreements and economic growth. I wish to have a private meeting with King Magnus to consolidate Gondor's position of diplomacy in western Audaxia. As you are my closest ally, Sémarë, I would desire for you and Herendil to come with me so that everyone will have full disclosure on what is said. I believe that a great opportunity is presenting itself to establish peace in Audaxia for a half century at least if we can successfully reach an understanding with Hawkwick. I see in Hawkwick a potential ally in the west, and a shield against any future security shakeups in our neck of the woods. Together, Gondor and Ascarenor can build up our position as the Dragons of the East, beginning with a good relationship with Hawkwick. What say you, honorable Sémarë?" |
