"Easier said than done, my lord." "And yet, I've sent it, haven't I? And for the love of the Gods, stop calling me 'My lord', would you, Strenger?" "Of course--Magnus." Today was among the most important days in history for the High King of Hawkwick, Magnus II, or so it appeared. The invitation had been sent for only about four hours, but he knew that at least somebody was discussing their arrival. He'd attached the dates to the same document, too - the Reception was to start in two days. It was a bit of a short notice, but given his schedule, that wasn't much of a surprise. He knew that at the very least, Vandinium's delegation would show up, if only because his sister would get them all to go. Artstotskza and the newly-liberated Heimar, always intertwined in Hawkwickan pursuits in some way, were likelier to send someone to attend than most other nations, but he didn't rule out their total absence; they had their own problems these days. But for once, his neighbors were not what concerned him - he wanted to meet the rest of the world, properly. He wanted peace to become prosperity, and for that, he needed foreign entanglements, foreign money, even. And, while his wife had tried to console him, it was rather true: his friends were limited to his Generals and Fredrick. He needed more people in his life above all, if not for friendship than for at least some sort of animosity, something that broke the repetitiveness of what his life had slowly delved into. Sighing, he laid back in the couch, awaiting responses, or perhaps his wife's arrival. It'd been a hectic few months. "More wine, General Jensen?" asked the servant, looking over the woman in the military uniform. She shook her head. "No. Go away." The man nodded at once, strolling out of the room awkwardly. Evelyn Jensen had been given the crucial task of testing the refreshments in the main chamber of the palace - a chamber that hadn't been properly used since an event she'd actually attended back around a decade prior. Of course, the team behind the drink was a different entity, one provided by a business conglomerate of local Volunruud cafes, breweries, and restaurants. None of that particularly mattered to her right now, but in her short tenure as a General, she'd come to find out two things: it was always useful to know who was behind everything; and that she was a shit commander. The second point's source had come out of desperation, and had originally been more of a symbolic gesture than anything - but with Arminsen's death, a lot of doors had opened up for her. And one of those doors was looking particularly promising: the door to DRAGON leadership, and by extension, a whole lot of finding out who was behind everything, A welcome change from field command; and perhaps more importantly, a job where she could rest, and let others do the heavy lifting. Spirits knew she was tired of that. She only hoped she'd end up in a more promising position than the last Jensen who'd held the job, Rickard, who, under Hellhorn, had gotten himself torn to bits by none other than Elisia Drainheart. Evelyn was glad that thing was gone; it'd brought only chaos. Congratulations, Narheim. she thought, remembering the official account of that fateful day. What an opportunist, Narheim was. Liquidating his friend, the Kaiser, and his barely-returned wife as soon as they'd proved to be detrimental to him? The media had painted him as a deeply flawed, yet deeply evil man, but she thought there was more to that story than they'd let on. The answers, at this point, were only a phone call away. |

![]() To:- High King Magnus We wish your nation a prosperous new start following your refounding. As such we would like to attend your ball and convey these wishes in person as well as beginning more formal relations between our nations. I would like to attend this event in person accompanied by my wife Empress Anja, also should the situation permit I would like my 12 year old daughter to attend as I believe it is time she begins to experience the duties and expectations placed at the feet of a royal, such a joyous occasion as this would be ideal. I also would like to request an oppurtunity to meet in person to discuss a more formal establishment of diplomatic ties, if this is of interest to you. God Be With You Emperor Hans III Prince of Thale Duke of Bornholm |

![]() "I trust that your guards know how to do their jobs, General?" asked the High King, staring off of the balcony onto the rather quaint Volunruud skyline below. Jensen nodded. "Yes." she trailed off, looking down to the much closer courtyard. "You see, I've been thinking of-" "I know about your struggles with DRAGON leadership, Evelyn." interjected Magnus. "You must understand there's an election process, a whole block of candidates they have to consider." he continued. "I heard they're considering my wife. Can you imagine?" "You weren't elected." said Evelyn, a bit quieter than before, much to her own surprise. She'd thought out loud again, another habit she'd have to unlearn if it meant realizing her goal. She looked up awkwardly towards Magnus. "I know. But my situation's not the same...I saw people believed in me...I saw I could make a difference. You know I considered myself a stupid kid then, and I still sometimes do now. I haven't told you much about me." "You don't need to, Magnus, it's a working relationship..." she countered, looking over his bearded face briefly. "Evelyn. If you want to be the head of DRAGON, we need to trust each other. Completely. I know you know what I mean." he asserted briefly, before returning his gaze to the now-setting sun, and the carpenters moving stuff around in the courtyard. The final days of preparations were upon them. "Bad habit. Sorry." she confessed. "I trust you, Magnus. I trust you more than anyone else in the whole command structure, at this point. Then again, it is a fairly new command structure." The High King nodded, stroking his bearded chin, as if he was searching for something to say that he hadn't already. "You're in charge of the whole palace's security for the whole length of this reception, if that gives you any indication about my stance on that. Consider it a proving ground for DRAGON leadership. I guess they could say I'm 'grooming' you for military intelligence leadership, but I don't really care at this point. You're going to meet a lot of people I know you want to forget, I hope you know that. Fredrick's going to be there, and trust me, I know what happened between you and him. Anyone else could turn up, and the first step to being an intelligence director is keeping a cool head. Think you can do that? Act casual, direct some guards around?" The young General nodded. "Yeah." "Good. I'm counting on you, Jensen." |
